How to Get Your Money’s Worth With a Turtleneck
One thing I like is making a basic outfit unique in some way. That’s how you show your true self: by adding a touch that’s uniquely you. So as I provide possibilities for you to create new outfits from basic wardrobe pieces, it’s up to you to choose what you love best. Today’s basic is a turtleneck. Following are the style elements of it, how to accessorize it, different ways to wear it in general and outfit combinations. There’s plenty of food for thought…and creativity…with just this one simple item! So take a look at what I have come up with. My hope is that my ideas will help you to find more ways to use your turtlenecks than you ever did before. And the more times you wear and enjoy them, the less your cost per wear.
Turtlenecks are a Winter staple because they are so warm, of course! They add coverage too, so age doesn’t matter. Now, let’s get started!
How to Style a Turtleneck
This is an updated post in order to provide you with the highest quality content.
Let your turtleneck be the only knit piece in your outfit. Then add light layers underneath, like peekaboo shirttails, a tissue-thin tee or a flowing silk dress. On the bottom, team your big knit t-neck with trim bottoms. Think skinnies, dark slacks and a low kitten heel or loafer.
For classic style, match a turtleneck to your blazer.
Style Elements
A turtleneck is a layering piece that can go under just about anything.
Wear turtlenecks like you would statement necklaces. A bright turtleneck will bring a dose of color to a neutral outfit.
How to Accessorize
You can make your outfit more interesting with accessories like necklaces, bracelets, earrings, scarves and belts. Go for layered necklaces, multiple bangles and/or a colorful scarf.
Examples:
- Add long bead necklaces or coin necklaces to a turtleneck tunic + leggings.
- Add a long, metallic necklace over a t-neck for work.
- Accessorize with a gypsy statement necklace + a couple of bangles and/or cuffs + silver and/or gold stacking rings.
- Add a chunky chain necklace to a chunky t-neck.
- Add a big statement necklace.
- Wear your favorite necklace, such as: long pendant necklaces, colorful beaded necklaces, pearls, layered necklaces.
- If you want to draw attention to your hands and lower body, add an interesting bracelet, such as: pearls, chains, crystals, bangles and beaded bracelets.
- Wear a gorgeous silk scarf: let it hang loose with ends in front.
- Put your hair up and show off a pair of beautiful earrings, such as: large pearl or diamond/cubic zirconia stud earrings, fashion hoop earrings, long chandelier or drop earrings.
- Wear a necklace & earrings set.
- A delicate gold pendant or three is just fine.
Ways to Wear It
Wear It Over…
- A short-sleeve turtleneck over a matching or toned long-sleeve top. Add your choice of bottoms, such as jeans.
- A sleeveless turtleneck over a top with sleeves.

Wear It Under…

- Wear a thin t-neck under a t-shirt.
- Layer a turtleneck under a slip dress or sleeveless dress. This is especially good if they are the same color. But a t-neck winterizes a dark floral dress, too. Warm it up even more with the addition of a leather jacket & moto boots.

So many great ideas! I love turtleneck, in particular with layering. Helps me wear summer dresses all year. Thanks for linking
Thanks, Gail, I appreciate your feedback!
I love turtlenecks and had one that I loved to death, mostly wearing it by itself with my usual “uniform” = jeans (both pants and jacket) or with jeans and a light embroidered jacket.
I can’t stand long sleeves anymore, though, but also don’t like short ones and I have yet to find a turtleneck with 3/4 sleeves I like.

Hi, Cat – What about a sleeveless turtleneck to layer under things? I think you can find unique sleeves on turtlenecks now, too, if you like something different. Thanks for your feedback! – Angie
I mean, honestly, is there anything you can’t wear a turtleneck with? I do prefer the tissue weight as I do get warm, but I also love that they cover that crepe on my neck! I love all these beautiful turtlenecks! Thanks for sharing, Angie!
