How to Use the Amazing Powers of Color
Sometimes when we’re sad or it’s a rainy drab day devoid of color, we dress in bright colors to cheer ourselves up. We might paint our bedroom blue because it is a calming color that makes it easy to relax. It’s obvious that colors around us affect how we feel and how we operate. All through our lives, we can use color to improve how we feel in so many ways. Age doesn’t matter. In fact, the more experience we have the more adept we become at using certain colors to our advantage.
How Colors Affect Us
Chromotherapy, sometimes called color therapy or colorology, is an alternative medicine method. It supports the premises of Chinese, Egyptian and Ayurvedic healing traditions in which color is intrinsic to healing. Different colors cause different reactions. For example:
- red increases circulation
- yellow stimulates nerves
- orange increases energy
- blue and green soothe everything from skin irritations to anxiety
- blue light can reset our biological clocks in respect to sleep rhythms
- green enhances creative performance
Red, orange and yellow are the colors that can evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy. They are next to each other on the color wheel and are all warm colors. However, yellow and orange can also slightly irritate the eyes and red can increase a person’s appetite.
An article on “Colour Therapy” in The Guardian stated:
“Light moves in waves of varying lengths and, as each colour has a different wavelength, we sense them all individually. Colour therapists (or chromatherapists) believe that different colours in the spectrum correspond with the body’s inner vibrations. If your vibrations are off-kilter, therapists believe that colour can harmonise and rebalance them if treated with the right colours….The seven colours of the spectrum relate to the seven main chakras – or energy centres – of the body.”
They went on to say:
“There is some evidence that colour affects our mood and general wellbeing. In 1958, US scientist Robert Gerard conducted a study that claimed red stimulates and makes us anxious, while blue promotes calm. He also showed that colour could affect appetite, blood pressure and aggression.”
There is a growing body of research by physicians, environmentalists, psychologists and alternative medicine specialists exploring how color can affect people physically, mentally and emotionally.
