How to Carry a Backpack After a Certain Age
The lady above indeed has elegant style. She is Joyce Carpati, one of the subjects of Ari Cohen’s “Advanced Style” blog, movie and books. She is proud to reveal that she is in her 80’s and going strong. Here, she shows how to carry a backpack in a sophisticated way. Age doesn’t matter.
I decided to cover this subject after a professional lady of a certain age criticized the style of backpacks as only fit for very young women. I thought to myself, “I like backpacks and would carry one myself from time to time. Why not?”
When I was on a trip to New York, I bought a small cognac faux leather backpack while out shopping to help carry my purchases. Later, I bought a sleek black nylon backpack for around town. They’re good for travel, all over the world in fact. And they really come in handy when I go to outings of all sorts.
I’ve heard others say a backpack is good for just carrying all of the sundries they want to take with them when they go out for the day. A backpack can hold a lot more than a purse: like snacks, a pair of backup shoes, an umbrella and maybe even a laptop.
They also leave your hands free for doing more than you can while holding onto a purse.
It’s a lot healthier to carry things across both shoulders and centered at your back, rather than with the load pulling one shoulder down.
In her post, “7 Backpack Handbags For 2015” on Bustle, Jodie Layne suggested pairing a backpack purse with an oversize wool coat, structured boots and sunglasses for a chic but effortless look.
Even Oprah had an array of “12 Non-Dorky Backpacks for Grown-ups,” so you know it’s okay to continue through life with the freedom to use a backpack as long as it’s got some class to it.
Designer backpacks abound, and you can find refined backpacks for women just about everywhere! Following are some examples.

I would love a faux leather backpack. I have a cloth one which I have used while biking, but I hesitate in crowds because a friend of mine had her wallet stolen out of hers.

Good point, Carmen 🙂 I don’t wear a backpack often, but I feel free to do so. Age doesn’t matter to me. Despite it’s advantages, a backpack also has a down side. They’re not good to carry in a crowd. And it’s good to keep your wallet hidden in a separate place just like you would if carrying a purse somewhere that would make you nervous. Thanks for your input! — Angie
