How to Be Really Creative with How You Dress
When we are young, we may dress creatively to experiment with who we are. When we are older, we may dress creatively to freely express who we now know we are. Age doesn’t matter. The main thing is to have fun and feel good.
This week I was in New York for a mini vacation to see my son in the opening of the play “Raising Jo” off Broadway. One morning while waiting at the bus stop I noticed a woman’s uniquely stylish shoes. At first, I thought they looked like a takeoff on the sock shoe and sock boot trend. But as I looked more closely, I realized she had black footies on with her platform sandals. I introduced myself and found out her name is Doreen Chan and she is from Singapore.
Footies are often called sock liners or no-show socks or peds. They are made to wear inside closed-toe shoes to provide comfort and yet show bare ankles, as if you didn’t have any socks on at all. So this was a surprise, to realize that she was wearing sock liners to show. They blend with the design of the sandal perfectly!
Socks and sandals have been trending in recent years. At first it was just regular ankle socks with shoes or sandals. Then came sheer socks, which are often worn with high heels or sneakers. I mentioned them in my article “How to Wear Sheer Clothing with Confidence.” They can be embroidered mesh, fishnet, lace, etc.
You can get footies in fishnet, lace and different textures as well. The problem is that most footies show even though they are not supposed to. So one way to live with that is to make the edges lacy so it looks good when they show. Hue Women’s Hidden Cotton Liner work well if you don’t want them to show at all.
Doreen didn’t just get creative with her footwear. Her entire outfit contained multiple elements of styling. Her bomber jacket is satin with cranes embroidered on the back. She is carrying a backpack in a wild print combined with pants in another wild print. They are tied together by the black ground and the similar type and scale of prints. You can find out more about print mixing in my article “How to Be Bold and Creative with Print Mixing.”
I would go so far as to say that Doreen used quantum creativity when she got dressed! She’s definitely an inspiration.

You look beautiful and so young! Love your fringe trim Kimono! Doreen certainly has fun with fashion too! I am looking for lace and fishnet socks, but haven’t found any yet.
How wonderful that you got to go to the opening of your son’s play! I love NYC and was there last summer.

BTW Some of your photos are sideways on my computer in this post.
I got fishnet socks with stars on them from Free People. 🙂 When I go to this post on my computer, as well as on my phone, the photos are all straight. Hmmm, I’m not sure why they are not so on your computer…?? I’ll have to check around for help, I guess.
