Age doesn't matter.

How to Get Dressed Quick on the Weekdays

If you have business to take care of during the week and have to get up and go early, you may have days when it’s hard to wake up and you’re in a rush.  Even if you don’t have to work, you may be meeting someone.  Age doesn’t matter.

In the best of worlds, you would have all your outfits for the week planned over the weekend…or an outfit chosen and laid out the night before.  But things don’t always work out that way.

As I encountered this problem, I was happy to find some solutions…lots of them!  So from wardrobe coordination to outfit ideas, I’ve collected an emergency kit for rushed mornings. Here are some tips to get out of the house in a hurry.  I hope they help!

Organizing Your Wardrobe for Readiness

Needless to say, it helps to have an organized closet.  It’s nice to be able to clearly see your tops, pants, skirts, dresses, and suits or sets in separate sections.  And be sure your shoes and accessories are organized, too, so that you can see them all:  shoes on racks and/or in see-through boxes, scarves stacked on shelving or hung on scarf racks.

To me, the biggest headache is when necklaces are all tangled up and you don’t have time to extract the one you want.  So I think having them in neat order is even more important than clothes.  Which reminds me, another headache is when hangers start getting stuck over each other and tangling clothes together.  The key to that is to have all matching hangers.  Here are velvet hangers that fit closely, keep clothes from slipping off, and can hold a matching top and bottom or suit as well:

Get Dressed Quick:  Weekday Mornings

  • This is the simplest and one you already know:  just put on a dress (but make sure you can reach the zipper by yourself)!  In fact, you may just want to choose a certain dress to make your go-to for mornings when you’re in a hurry.  You might want to grab a cardigan to cover up with, too.

  • It’s a cinch to put on a matching top and bottom set.

  • Throw a vest over whatever’s hanging at the front of your closet.  No matter what you wear, a vest spiffs it up.

  • Add a scarf to any outfit.  It spiffs things up, just like a vest.

  • Go monochromatic:  just toss on all the same colors (i.e., black blouse + black pants + black pumps).  That way you look put together.

  • Mix prints and colors.  For instance, just grab the first prints you see and go for it!  This makes for a creative look.  If you’re going somewhere conservative, mixing colors is more acceptable.  It may even turn out looking like color blocking if you’re lucky!
  • Reach for a striped tee.  It can be dressed up with trousers or a skirt.

  • Use your Sunday outfit for work Monday morning (i.e., wear the same tops you wore the day before and pair them with a skirt and heels).
  • Combine black with white or gray.  For instance a gray top with black bottoms is a low-key, sophisticated look.

  • I always end up in black when I don’t know what to wear. A dress is easy too since it’s one piece & you’re done

  • I used to do many of these ideas, Angie. In fact, I’d wear the same pants all 4 days to work for a week. No one really noticed my pants anyways, and I saw different patients throughout the week too! Then at the end of the week, I knew they pants were ready to be dry cleaned or washed!!

    • Good point, Jodie. For desk jobs, a pair of black pants can look totally different every day of the week with a different top and accessories. So a favorite pair of basic pants can be a good thing to reach for when in a hurry!
