How to Delight in the Age You Are Right Now
“Wishing to be younger or older is a denial of the joys that have been and the joys yet to be, as well as the beauty of your life in the present.” — from “Enjoying Your Age” by Madisyn Taylor at the Daily OM
Age doesn’t matter. Why? Because it’s the present moment right now that matters. Who you are right now is special. What’s special about where you are right now in life? Think about what you appreciate about the age you are right now, and please let us know by leaving a comment below this blog post! And I mean everybody, no matter your age. Thank you for being you!
Taylor’s article puts this issue into perspective in a poetic way. It is inspirational and it is encouraging, short and to the point. I recommend giving it a read.
How I Came to Delight in the Moment I’m In Now
I became more grounded in the now as my kids were growing up. When they were babies (I’m not a baby person, whereas my husband totally adores babies) I would look forward to when they could walk, talk, go to the bathroom by themselves, etc. And I would wish breastfeeding every two hours and changing diapers would be over with. But then, as they grew, I would miss the days when they were still little and remember all the cute things they used to do. Then I panicked because they were growing up so fast, and I realized that the way I was thinking was making me miss it as it was happening. So I became very clear that I wanted to cherish each moment and not miss it by wishing for the past or the future.
How I Came to Delight in the Season I’m In Right Now
I stayed home for 15 years to focus on raising my children. During that time, I really enjoyed each season: the foods, the sights, the scents, the joys of the changing weather, the activities of each time of the year. I haven’t lost that. Now I still enjoy each season from beginning to end, not wishing for the present one to end or the next one to come. I just appreciate where I’m at.
When you think about it, our lives go through seasons as well. I love the idea of savoring each and every season of life. I’d like to encourage you to do the same if you aren’t already. I know there are many women who just want to be the best of who they are this very moment. I agree with that, do you?

Unbelievably, deciding to grow my short dyed hair out and grey, unleashed a feeling of appreciation for my age. I turned 74 in November. My hair went through a salt and pepper stage I didn’t care for. But now it’s predominantly silver and down my back! I remind myself of my Mama Pachita who took care of me when I was younger. She had beautiful long wavy hair.
There’s so many ways to do my hair now! I love it!
Esperanza, it sounds beautiful and so freeing…being your true self! I’m feeling inspired hearing about it. Your visualization of the beauty of doing this sounds very self affirming as well. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience!
I totally agree Angie, it’s important to live in the present and be thankful for the day, “to savour each and every season of life.” Staying young is a state of mind, we can stay young at heart. Keep active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Age doesn’t matter. 🙂
Blessings!
