How to Be Glamorous in Evening Pajamas
Evening pajamas are not for sleeping, but rather for partying! Since at least the 1920’s, women have entertained at home in silky, sexy, comfortable pajama outfits; then at the dinner parties of friends; then out to the theater and now on the streets day and night. From Greta Garbo to Kate Moss, think of comfortable and flowing clothes in silky materials, soft cashmere, generous volumes, loose-fitting trousers, long flowing skirts, slides (especially sequined), slip-on shoes and smoking slippers.
All About How to Be Glamorous in Evening Pajamas
If you find a matching top and bottom in silky, satiny or cashmere fabrics, you’re all set for a comfortable evening look. There are designer sets, but you might find something at a vintage shop. Here’s an evening pajama I found on Etsy:
Age doesn’t matter with this vintage look which can easily be updated by using modern pieces. Since the comfort and glamour can’t be beat, I have suggestions for how you can create this evening look for yourself. It’s likely that you already have the components in your closet.
But if you really want to shine, here’s a sequin set for you:
A silky kimono, slip dress or gown, silk drawstring pants, palazzo pants or even a caftan are all good starting points. Then add a flowing top or bottom. This is not the time to combine voluminous with form-fitting since the main idea is comfort. To add shape, use a sash, tie-belt or a length of satin ribbon tied in a bow in front. Chinoiserie fits right in here, too, as Chinese fabrics and mandarin-collar tops go well with elastic-waist silky pants.
And may I dare say that this following outfit resembles an evening pajama? The long slinky dress with the long easy-fit cashmere duster looks comfortable, and able to be dressed up with embellished or velvet flats.
Here are Some Ideas for How to Create Your Own Evening Pajama:
- Entertaining at home: A black or black printed blouse + black silk or jersey trousers or skirt. Wear blouse very open — push up & roll sleeves. Add necklaces and bracelets, tuck a fresh flower in your hair. Tie a black & gold sash at waist. Wear black satin flats — Or belt in gold faux leather, and add gold sandals and lots of gold jewelry.
- Modern take on an evening pajama: A sweater or blouse semi-tucked into a jersey or silky skirt.
- A black silk blouse + cream drawstring pants. You might want to add some pearls or a sparkly accessory.
- Entertaining at home: A paisley or silky Indian tunic + trousers. Add gold slippers.
- Festive, sexy evening: Navy velvet pants + navy velvet camisole — Or a black cashmere tank top + black cashmere pants.
- Out on the town: An ivory satin blouse + black cashmere pants. Open the blouse as much as you dare (or wear a black or ivory tank in a luxe fabric, lace, etc., and open blouse to waist). Tie a belt of black satin ribbon in a bow at center front of waist. Add black satin sandals + gold & crystal beads + gold earrings.
- Bare evening pajama for museum opening, dinner party, cocktails, etc.: A black lacy tank top or camisole + black jersey pants. Add a 54″ square of red & black printed silk or a velvet shirt worn open as a jacket + a black & gold belt + black satin or gold sandals.

I have to laugh because I just found a pair of blue velvet joggers at the thrift store, and I’ve been wearing them as my lounge wear. I thought they were dressier than sweats, yet just as comfy!!

A long time ago, I found a pair of black velvet joggers at the thrift store and I wore them everywhere for decades! Now I’m having a hard time finding a replacement pair that has the perfect fit that they had. Well, now you look like a fashion blogger when you’re around the house as well as when you go out! 😀 There aren’t many photos nowadays, but a long silky skirt with a blouse and belt can also be an evening pajama. It’s a vintage look; think Greta Garbo. It’s a soft and beautiful evening way to dress!
