How to Look at Spring Colors in a Summery Kind of Way

When spring began, I presented to you Pantone’s NY Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 Color Trend Report.  You can read my post, “Introducing Spring 2019 Colors and How to Use Them” HERE.  Pantone’s colors are for both seasons:  spring and summer.  Now that it’s the end of spring, the sun is coming out more often and the weather is warming up quite a bit.  So I am looking at the spring colors now in a summery kind of way.

An easy way to create an outfit from whatever you have in your closet is to choose a color combination.  So I have listed summer color combos below to inspire your outfit choices.  Age doesn’t matter.  Wear the colors you love and express your true self.

My favorite color is blue green and it happens to be one of the colors that look good on me.  I used to gravitate toward black, but now it seems to be getting replaced with blue greens quite a bit.  Those blue greens have become my signature color.  Feel free to find your best and favorite color and use it like crazy!  🙂

Summertime is when nature is in full bloom, so we tend to dress in the bright sun-saturated colors that surround us. Even if you’re natural coloring is an autumn or winter palette, you can take a look at the summer color combinations that I present here and choose the ones that work best for you.  After all, you have your favorite colors and you most likely know what looks good on you.

Actually, I discovered that there are universal colors that look good on anyone.  And they happen to be from the summer palette.  All you have to do is adjust the tone of these colors to suit you best (i.e., lighter or deeper, brighter or softer).  Here they are:

If you feel that you need to slim down a certain part of your body or draw some attention to your assets, you can use colors to do that.  Needless to say, dark colors are slimming and light colors bring are expansive.  Dark navy or deep wine colors like aubergine have the same slimming effect as black.  Just remember that bright colors attract attention, so wear them on areas that you’re happy to show off.

During the spring and summer, camel shades are much better neutrals than black.  They lighten up your look.  Plus, camel exudes confidence so it’s a good color for your work wardrobe.

Now let’s take a look at summer color combos…

Summer’s Rainbow Brights

• Yellow + red
• Yellow + gray
• Green + yellow
• Blue + green
• Blue + orange

• Blue + red
• Red + orange
• Red + navy
• Red + green
• Red + aqua or turquoise
• Poppy red + black and/or white

Tropical Colors

1. Fuschia + tangerine + sand
2. Purple + green + orange (You can wear two for your clothes and one for your accessories, or vice versa)
3. Kelly green + lime green, medium to dark blue, turquoise, bright yellow, cobalt blue, white or a subdued shade of blue
4. Coral + another shade of coral + one of the following neutrals:  gray, soft white, sand, warm beige, cream, ivory, khaki, sage, or navy
5. Coral + one of the following neutrals:  gray, soft white, sand, warm beige, cream, ivory, khaki, sage, or navy
6. Coral + peach + amber
7. Coral + lime green + mauve + olive
8. Coral + forest green + storm gray
9. Coral + melon
10. Coral + blue + white
11. Orange + yellow (you may add a third color, such as red or coral)
12. Orange + teal
13. Aqua + turquoise or teal + one of the following neutrals:  gray, soft white, sand, warm beige, cream, ivory, khaki, sage, or navy
14. Aqua + two of the following neutrals:  gray, soft white, sand, warm beige, cream, ivory, khaki, sage, or navy
15. Turquoise or teal + two of the following neutrals:  gray, soft white, sand, warm beige, cream, ivory, khaki, sage, or navy

Pastels

• A pastel color + gray, camel or winter white (keep it pale)
• A pastel color + a primary color (red, yellow, or blue).  For example:
• Baby blue + red
• Pink + red
• Pink + yellow

  

• A pastel color + black + white (i.e., black bottoms +  white top + light blue topper)
• Warm pink or blush + coral or deep peach
• Warm pink or blush + gray
• Pink or blush + aqua or turquoise
• Pale pink + mustard + tan
• Petal pink + the colors of a desert sunset, such as:  orange, coral, copper, a glass of cognac at dusk
• Pink + green
• Pink + aqua or turquoise
• Sky blue + coral or deep peach

• Pink or blush + sky blue
• Coral or deep peach + gray
• Sky blue + lemon yellow
• Sky blue + light navy
• Sky blue + soft white
• Baby blue + black + silver

• Pale blue + aubergine
• Mint + turquoise, pale blue, chocolate brown, white, light to medium yellow, other icy pastels, or with nudes, darker blues
• Seafoam green + mint, ocean blue, sand or coral.  Add a coral-based blush and lipstick
• Peach or coral + aqua or turquoise
• Pale yellow + moss green

Summer Neutrals

1. Navy + black
2. Navy + white or ivory.  Add pops of turquoise, coral or red.
3. Light navy + yellow
4. Light navy + tan or light brown
5. Light navy + deep peach or coral
6. Gray + yellow
7. Gray + red
8. Gray + green
9. Gray + tan or light brown
10. Gray + seafoam green
11. Gray + blue
12. Gray + lavender
13. Gray + lemon yellow
14. Gray + navy.  May add virtually any other shade, including brown.

    

15. Tan + orange
16. Tan or light brown + aqua or turquoise
17. A latte shade of tan with desert-like tones like sky blue, mauve or washed-out cactus
18. Light tan + a deeper shade of tan
19. Light tan + ice blue
20. Light tan+ dusty rose
21. Light tan + sage
22. Blush as a neutral + any other solid color, stripes or print
23. Black + white + tan
24. White + navy + red accents (nautical mood)
25. Chocolate brown + copper (safari mood).  Try layering in light fabrics like silk and chiffon.  May add rose gold.
26. Spruce + teal (unexpected neutrals).  May add a wine or burgundy accent, but not red because it screams Christmas!  Or add a shade like gray or pink.
27. Leopard + navy blue
28. Leopard + olive green
29. Leopard with pinks (from carnation to blush)
30. Leopard with reds
31. Leopard + pistachio green
32. Leopard + lavender
33. Leopard with EVERYTHING!  (as a neutral, like blue jeans go with everything)

Other Summer Color Combos

1. Jade green + spruce, navy, off-white or eggplant
2. Green + gold
