Secrets of How to Enjoy Special Clothes Every Day
I first saw this video on Facebook. It is a bit of a tearjerker. Steve Edge of Edge Design tells a story that encourages us all to wear our best clothes for every day instead of saving them for special events. Click on his video below to hear his story. When you are done watching, you will find some secrets of how to enjoy your special clothes every day below.
Age doesn’t matter. If you have beautiful clothes you love that you have been storing away, why don’t you pull them out and dare to wear them anytime?
More Stories About Why to Enjoy Your Special Clothes Every Day
Steve’s story reminds me of my grandmother. She and my grandfather immigrated to America from Poland where they worked hard but had little. Later, the Great Depression made them afraid to spend the money that my grandfather had been making. He bought her a fur coat that she was thrilled to have. But she saved it just like they saved every penny they had. It was the only special thing she owned. She was afraid to wear it anywhere except for a very special occasion that never came. It was hanging in her closet unworn until the day she died.
I have a flowing floral maxi dress and a maxi skirt or two with sequins and lace. I feel that they are for wearing on special occasions.
When I first wore the dress, I got compliments all day. A cashier at a restaurant was admiring it and I mentioned that it seemed to me I should save it for special occasions. She encouraged me that it was perfect for hot summer days just about anywhere.
When I first bought a black maxi skirt with lace and blue sequins, I asked the saleslady, “But where on earth will I wear this? I’ll have to save it for special occasions.” She laughed and said, “You can wear this anytime. You can figure out a way.” Eventually I realized that it was a tiered skirt to wear anytime. Just because the embellishments on black made it look special didn’t mean it had to wait to go out!
How Can You Style Your Special Clothes for Every Day?
You can dress down your special clothes to wear every day by combining them with something casual. That could mean a rougher, natural material or a very casual style, etc.
The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style by Kim France and Andrea Linett is one of my favorite style books. It has a chapter showing the design elements of each type of style. One of the chapters is “Posh Eclectic.” It’s an experimental style where evening wear is dressed down for day and everyday clothes are dressed up for evening. Here’s an excerpt from “How to Get the Look”:
“Wear an Evening Dress During the Day – Posh eclectic women are the queens of day-to-night and night-to-day dressing. To them, these are one and the same, and there’s no such thing as something too dressy to trot out for lunch. It might be frothy or sequined, or simple and silky — there isn’t really a rule here. To wear it for day, mix it in with two (or more, depending on just exactly how eclectic you want to be) pieces that go delightfully against the grain of the dress’ fancy mood, like a tweed blazer and sturdy ankle boots, or an oversize sweater and ballet flats. Dark matte tights make a great instant contrast against light floaty styles too.”
For warm weather, you can try this same advice with spring and summer casual pieces such as t-shirts, flat sandals, peasant skirts, straw hats and bags, etc.
More ideas from The Lucky Guide
- Layer a lace top with your most workaday pieces or jeans and a sweater for day.
- On rainy days, go ahead and wear your Wellies rain boots with a skirt.
- A circle skirt, velvet jacket and lace-up riding boots are ruggedly feminine.
- Pair a ruffled skirt with a Fair Isle sweater, a houndstooth or tweedy jacket, or items with a similar tailored or rugged feel.
- A ruffled blouse with trousers and bow-tie heels are presentable for business.
Who Is Steve Edge?
From his website, Steve Edge Design Ltd., here is his bio:
“Steve Edge was raised in a hard-working family with two siblings and a pet chimpanzee. His father worked in Smithfield Meat Market, but was also an abstract sculptor and animal trainer. Steve undoubtedly inherited this creativity, and a bag of glitter, magic markers and plastic scissors have been his fundamentals for happiness since he was four years old.
Having been diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, art and design became the way Steve expressed himself. At 15 he won the European Artist of the Year competition, catching the eye of one of London’s top design agencies who offered him a job as a result. Steve later spent a while working on films, including Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark with George Lucas.
In 1982 Steve established his own agency, Edge Design. Since then he has worked with some of the best-known names in the country, including Cartier, Dior, Skanska, Fortnum and Mason, Hamleys, Purdey Gun and Rifle Makers, and Essential Living. Steve believes that storytelling is key to successful branding. He works closely with clients to understand what makes them unique and incorporates this into the big idea behind the design.
These days, Steve is also well known for his eccentric dress sense and passion for fishing. He is a recognised public speaker, delivering inspiring talks at a variety of international events, including DO Lectures and TEDx, on why we should choose lateral over literal and inspiration over information.”

I love this post and definitely agree that we should try to make all of our clothes work for all occasions! I’ve worn my sequin skirt for day and also with my Hunter boots!
