How to Be Modest in Absolutely Anything Bodycon
Do you have clothes that are too skimpy, too tight, too short or too revealing for you to feel good wearing them? You don’t have to wear them out in public the way they are, yet you don’t have to get rid of them. You could, however, wear them at home with your significant other! 😉 But today I’ll share tips with you on how to be more modest in absolutely anything body conscious so you can go out anywhere, anytime in comfort and confidence. Then just have fun and enjoy yourself!
Age doesn’t matter. There are ways to wear body-conscious clothing (or bodycon, for short) that can make them perfectly presentable. If you let a little of your most beautiful self peek out and add something to cover the rest, you’ve got it down!
So let’s get started on exploring the ways to wear bodycon and then come up with some outfit ideas.
How to Be Modest in Anything Bodycon
Pair something sexy and tight with something relaxed (your hair, too!)
For something too short, too revealing or too sexy, pair it with something that’s the opposite. Try something loose and baggy, casual and/or wear flat shoes with it. Of course, you could also layer it.
A Bodycon Skirt (whether mini or midi):
Wear a bodycon skirt with something slouchy and unsexy, like an oversized sweater or blazer, a loose or airy top, etc. Add boots or flats.
A Too-Short Skirt or Dress
- Wear over-the-knee boots, and maybe tights as well, with a short skirt or dress.
- Add leggings or jeans under a skirt or dress that’s too short.
- Add fleece-lined leggings or tights under a short skirt or dress.
- Wear a skirt over a dress that’s too short.
A Body-Con Dress:
- A bodycon dress + a blazer, cardigan, jacket or kimono.
- Wrap a sarong over a bodycon dress. You may also want to add a hat and/or sunglasses.
- Add a silk t-shirt over a bodycon dress.
- Add a t-shirt in a color to match a bodycon dress.
- A motorcycle jacket or a moto vest over a bodycon dress.
- Did you ever think of layering a safari jacket over a skimpy maxi dress?
- Add a peplum top over a bodycon dress. You might like to belt the peplum with a 1″ belt or so. Add heels for a classy evening look.
- Add a t-shirt or a turtleneck to a bodycon dress.
- Add a basic button-down blouse under a skimpy dress. Or, wear the blouse unbuttoned as a jacket over the dress.
- Try a boa to cover up a little black dress that’s just too little.
- Layer a kimono over a bodycon dress.
- Throw a duster over a bodycon dress.
- A shirt jacket over a bodycon dress.
- Wear a long top over a bodycon dress.
- Wear a sweater or cardigan over a bodycon dress.
- Layer a tunic over a bodycon dress. You might also add tights + slouchy socks scrunched over the tops of ankle boots. Leg warmers could work here too. Accessorize as desired.
A Skimpy Top:
- Add a lace or mesh or fishnet layering top over a skimpy top.
- Try a lace or mesh top or tank or tee under a plunging neckline.
- Add a camisole under a deep v-neck sweater. Ivory silk, satin and/or lace is the perfect cami to have on hand for this situation.
- Add a lacy bralette under a plunging top.
- Layer one v-neck under another to showcase your cleavage in a demure way.
Outfit Ideas for Bodycon Clothes
- A duster or long evening jacket over a catsuit or a fitted jumpsuit. You might want to close the jacket with a belt or brooch.
- A blouse under a deep v-neck sweater + jeans. Add boots.
- An olive cargo jacket over a black bodycon dress.
- A tunic shirt over a bodycon dress + pants (even flares.) Add a statement necklace. You might like to add a feather headpiece.
- A bodycon dress + a draped or voluminous cardigan + a faux leather jacket. Add ankle boots. If sunny, add sunglasses.
- A bodycon dress + a faux leather or denim jacket. Add heavy-soled shoes.
- A striped tank or tee over a bodycon dress + a black faux leather jacket. Add black ankle boots. If sunny, add sunglasses.
- An embellished tunic-length t-shirt over a bodycon dress. You might like to add a delicate necklace + a big, silky scarf + boots.
- Bodycon dress + leggings + a cozy cardigan. You might like to belt the cardi to define waist. Add a scarf + boots.
- A top over a bodycon dress + a plaid shirt worn open as a jacket + boots.
- Wear a loose pullover with a bodycon dress.
- A black top under a bodycon dress + a plaid shirt worn open over it as a jacket + a black faux leather jacket. Add black tights or opaques.
- A black turtleneck or t-shirt under a bodycon dress. You could also add black ankle boots + gold bracelets.
- A cashmere sweater over a bodycon dress. Add a pendant or two + ankle boots.
- A lacy camisole that comes up high enough under a bodycon dress + a cardigan. Add a pendant + earrings + bracelet + rings + ankle boots.
- Date Night: A jacket or blazer + a bodycon top + pants. Fill the neckline with one or two necklaces and/or wear statement earrings. Carry a glitzy clutch.
- A bodycon dress + a bomber jacket + biker boots or combat boots. You might like to cover your legs and bridge the line between hem and boots with tights or leggings.
- A pullover sweater + a bodycon dress. Add a jean jacket if you need an extra layer.
- A big scarf, pashmina or blanket shawl over a bodycon dress. Add ankle boots.

Lately, with the popularity of tighter (but stretchy) clothing, like leggings, there are several options for covering areas that you might not feel comfortable showing off. I feel like I’ve gotten pretty good at covering up… Great ideas here Angie for lots of options!
What a great post Angie! I love all your tips on how to wear snug fit clothing and still look awesome by “disguising” what you don’t want seen!
Thanks for taking the time to let me know, Phyllis! It’s nice to know that what I’m sharing is helpful and appreciated too. 🙂
I wish I’d written this blog earlier, before I moved from big, fabulous anything-goes-LA to a small town and threw out half a dozen of my bodycon dresses (due to the more conservative dress style). Thank you for sharing all these great ideas.
