How to Make Your Pencil Skirt Useful During the Warm Seasons

Do you tend to reach for your pencil skirt often in the Spring and Summer?  Or does it just sit in your closet getting overlooked while you wear shorts and sundresses?  Mine has been sitting there waiting, so I decided I may as well start using it.  It doesn’t matter if you are going to work, doing errands, going out for the evening, or just lounging on the weekend.  Age doesn’t matter.  I have come up with about 50 ways to make your pencil skirt useful during the warm seasons!

There are so many ways to wear a pencil skirt that I am writing about it in two parts.  This is Part One:  For the Warm Weather Seasons, Spring and Summer.  In the fall, I will write Part Two:  For the Cool Weather Seasons, Fall and Winter.

Some General Guidelines Regarding Pencil Skirts

Because of its slim shape, a pencil skirt is perfect for layering blouses, long vests, dusters, etc.  Create a column of color with a black tank or cami and a black pencil skirt and top it with any kimono or duster.

A black pencil skirt is a classic that I recommend as a basic piece to have in your wardrobe.  In the outfit combinations below, if you do not have a black pencil skirt feel free to substitute with what you have.

A pencil skirt, dressy or casual, any length, can be worn with a fluid or oversized pullover in a fine gauge for warm weather.  A top with a high-low hem or a split hem works well.  A swing top works, too.  A bib necklace is a good choice over a fine-gauge pullover.  Then you can add heels or loafers.  Kitten heels go well with a midi-length pencil skirt or one that’s not too short.

~All references to leather are recommended to be faux in order to be kind to animals.~

Casual and Colorful Outfits with a Pencil Skirt

Try wearing a pencil skirt in one of the following three ways, and then accessorize boldly as advised below.

1. A pencil skirt + a loose, patterned blouse.
2. A pencil skirt + a tank top.  Add heeled sandals.
3. A pencil skirt + a fitted t-shirt.  Add ballet flats.

Accessorize any of the above outfits with brightly-colored bangles, chunky rock necklaces, hoop or chandelier earrings and a small, colorful handbag.  Don’t be shy with color!

How to Make Your Pencil Skirt Useful for Business, Evening, Casual Days and More!

Casual Outfit Combinations

1. A t-shirt + a pencil skirt + sneakers. Add jewelry of your choice. You might want to add a crossbody bag. If sunny, add sunglasses.
2. A gray tee + a black, brown or navy pencil skirt. You may want to belt it; try a narrow belt over the t-shirt if it’s on the long side. For edge, you could add a black & metal spiked necklace.
3. A slogan t-shirt over a cotton knit pencil skirt.  Add wedge sandals + gold bracelets.  If sunny, add sunglasses.

   

4. A graphic t-shirt over any pencil skirt, short or long.  Add jewelry of choice + heels, especially if they’re colorful like red.
5. A blue striped shirt + a denim pencil skirt.
6. A tank top or tee + a pencil skirt.

   

7. A boho top + a denim pencil skirt.
8. A white tee tucked into a high-waisted pencil skirt.  Add a necklace + a bracelet on each wrist.  If sunny, add sunglasses.
9. A white tee tucked inside a pencil skirt.  Add leopard-print flats + bright accessories.

Business Outfit Combinations

The first thing that pops into our minds about a pencil skirt at work may be a sweater over a pencil or a jacket with a pencil.  But there are lots of other possibilities.  You might want to try some of the following ideas.

1. A button-down shirt + a pencil skirt (such as blue with navy, gray with black, or white with black.)  Add pumps + a gold watch, bracelet and/or cuff + a tote or briefcase + red lipstick.
2. A tunic (not sheer) + a black pencil skirt + a classic jacket.  Add heels.
3. A long tunic (not sheer, neckline not too low) + a pair of trousers.  Add flats or platforms.
4. A sleeveless black blazer belted over a black pencil skirt.  You might like to add black sandals.

   

5. A beige or khaki safari jacket + a black pencil skirt.  Add a crystal brooch on the jacket + beige heeled sandals + a red lip.
6. A black top + a gray or black & white pencil skirt.  Pair it with a jacket or blazer for work.
7. A blazer + a wrap top over a pencil skirt.  Add nude pumps + a colorful bib necklace or a statement necklace that fits into the wrap neckline.
8. Button or zip any black jacket or cardigan, faux leather or not, over a black pencil skirt.  If the jacket or cardigan shows skin, simply add a camisole underneath.

Evening Outfit Combinations

1. Easy Evening:  A white tee + a pencil skirt.  Add sparkly heels.
2. Easy Evening:  A black tank top tucked inside a black pencil skirt.  Add a black & gold or black & silver scarf as a belt + a black-toned bracelet.
3. A black tunic over a long brown matte jersey pencil skirt (column skirt.)  Add slides with a heel.  Apply a brown smokey eye and red lip.  You might also like to put your hair up.
4. An embroidered mesh top + a black pencil skirt.  Add black kitten heels + a black studded or embellished bag with a chain strap.

   

5. A white billowy blouse tucked inside a black pencil skirt.  Add chunky beads or pearls with gold inside the neckline + small dangle earrings + black heels.
6. A peplum top + a pencil skirt, short or midi.  Add heels.  You might also want to add a statement necklace, bracelets, earrings.
7. A brown lace top over a black pencil skirt.  Add black heels.
8. A black sequined blouse over a black pencil skirt.  Add black heels + stockings if you wear them.

Anytime – Versatile Outfit Combinations

Trick:  You can make a dress out of separates by pairing a top and skirt in the same color.  So in place of a little black dress, you can wear a black top with a black pencil skirt!  Top it off with a gold cuff and gold hoop earrings and you have a smashing look!

1. A ruffled tunic over a pencil skirt.  Add strappy wedge sandals.
2. A linen tunic shirt + a crisp pencil skirt.
3. A billowy blouse tucked inside a pencil skirt.  Add pumps, such as peep-toe pumps during warm weather.
4. A blouse + a long pencil skirt.
5. A white shirt + a pencil skirt.  You might like to add a necklace or two or three, long or short or both long and short, and perhaps some black sandals.

   

6. A black peplum top over a black pencil skirt.  Add a big gold watch with a chunky gold chain bracelet + gold hoop earrings.
7. A button-down shirt over a pencil skirt + a jean jacket.  Turn back the cuffs, shirt collar over jacket.  Add flat gold sandals.
8. A red lace t-shirt over a black camisole or tank + black pencil skirt + flats.  If cool, add a cardigan or blazer.
9. A sequined t-shirt + a pencil skirt.
10. A silk t-shirt tucked inside or over a pencil skirt, short or long.

    

11. A wrap top + a pencil skirt.  Add heels + a delicate necklace and bracelet.  If sunny, add sunglasses.
12. A ruffled t-shirt + a pencil skirt.  Add heels + simple accessories.
13. A sheer multi-color tunic over a camisole + a pencil skirt.
14. A colorful tank or tee inside a black pencil skirt.  If cool, add a black faux-leather jacket.
15. A short-sleeve gray t-shirt tucked inside a gray pencil skirt.  Layer a silver cuff with a bright-color cuff.
16. A white tee tucked inside a gray pencil skirt.  Add beads + a black belt.
17. A basic tank top + a long cardigan + a pencil skirt.
18. A silk top tucked into pencil skirt + a cardigan.  Add ballet flats.  You might also like to add a belt + a necklace.
19. A flattering soft knit top + a pencil skirt.
