The Plaid Blazer: 33 Ideas for How to Wear It
My sister passed on to me her vintage 1980’s black watch plaid blazer back when I was working an office job. It’s still useful and always will be. A plaid blazer is an autumn/winter staple that can go from work to weekend. Age doesn’t matter. I have 33 ideas here for how to wear it. These ideas go beyond the matching suit. So if you have a plaid suit, you might want to break out that blazer and see what else it can do!
Since the plaid blazer is a print, I start out with print mixing ideas. Then I have a few ideas for wearing it with dresses and skirts. And finally, I came up with 20 ways to wear it with different colors of jeans and other types of pants. I hope you will make use of some of these outfit ideas. I’d love to hear from you if you will leave a reply below!
Mix with Prints:
- A plaid blazer + a plaid shirt + jeans, colored or not. For example: a green plaid blazer + a teal plaid shirt + olive jeans.
- Try a plaid blazer over an animal print, polka dots, stripes, a clashing print in a matching color, a pretty round floral, or maybe even a watercolor print.
- Accessorize a plaid blazer with a plaid scarf.
- A plaid blazer belted over a floral maxi dress, in similar shades with at least one color in common.
- A plaid blazer + a tie-dyed tee + jeans. Add sneakers.
Wear Over a Dress:
- Plaid blazer belted over a dress. For example: a green plaid blazer belted with a narrow gray belt over a red dress.
- A little black dress + a plaid blazer. Add patterned tights + peep-toe booties + a cap.
- A plaid blazer over a t-shirt dress. You might like to add bangles.
Wear With a Skirt:
- A plaid blazer + a graphic t-shirt + short velvet or velveteen skirt. Add over-the-knee boots + tights or fishnet stockings. Roll back the blazer cuffs. Add bangles on both wrists. You might also like to add a gold watch (with one narrow gold bangle,) a choker and/or a fedora hat.
- A plaid blazer + a t-shirt + a short velvet or velveteen skirt. Add tall boots.
- A plaid blazer + a pencil skirt + a top of your choice.
- A plaid blazer + a sweater (try a patterned sweater in a color that’s in the blazer) + a black skirt (or a neutral color that is in the sweater or blazer). Add a few strands of toned pearls or beads + patterned tights + boots.
- A plaid blazer belted over a black lace camisole + a skirt. Add a brooch + a fedora + brown boots (lace-up boots would go well with this.) You might also like to add a pin to the hat.
Different Ways to Wear It With Jeans or Pants:
- A plaid blazer + yoga pants makes these pants presentable in public. Make sure the blazer covers the rear, though! A longer-length top can help.
- Same idea here: belt a plaid blazer over leggings with any top.
- A black turtleneck or sweater + black faux leather pants + a plaid blazer.
- A black watch plaid (green and navy) blazer + a graphic t-shirt + navy, olive, charcoal or black slim/straight-leg pants. Add pumps.
- A black watch plaid blazer (green and navy) blazer + brown pants + a top of your choice. Add a brown-toned brooch to lapel.
- A black graphic t-shirt + black skinny jeans + a plaid blazer. Add ankle boots.
- A plaid blazer + cargo pants + a top of your choice.
- A black turtleneck + skinny black pants or jeans + a plaid blazer. Add a black belt over the blazer.
- A plaid blazer + a black sweater + skinny black jeans. Add black heels + a big watch or bracelet. Roll cuffs of sweater back over the blazer cuffs if you can, or just shoot the cuffs.
- A black watch plaid blazer (green and navy) + a navy turtleneck + dark denim jeans. Layer some short delicate necklaces. Add stud earrings and a gold watch.
- A deep-hued plaid blazer + a dark-color turtleneck (deep purple, dark blue, etc.) + dark denim jeans. You might like to add hoop earrings + heels.
- A plaid blazer + a black turtleneck + dressy jeans. Add black heels. You might like to add a beret.
- A plaid blazer + destroyed skinny jeans + a white top. Add heels + a short chain necklace with a black & gold pendant + a clutch. If sunny, add sunglasses.
- A longer-length plaid blazer + skinny jeans + a top of your choice. If you’re going to take off the blazer at any time, choose a tunic-length top.
- A graphic t-shirt + blue jeans + a plaid blazer. Add pumps, ankle boots or sneakers.
- A navy blue lacy camisole + blue jeans + a plaid blazer. Add a couple of short pendants in the neckline + ankle boots. Cuff and push back the blazer sleeves.
- A plaid blazer + an animal-motif t-shirt + blue jeans.
- A plaid blazer + a white shirt tucked inside blue jeans. Add pearls and suede gloves.
- A striped tank or tee half tucked into blue jeans + a plaid blazer. Add a narrow brown belt + a few bracelets.
- A plaid blazer + a lacy camisole + blue jeans. Belt and add a delicate short necklace.

I love the collection! My favourite is the Dorset Blazer in Navy Glen Plaid from Madewell. When are you doing comfy jeans?
Thanks, Michelle! I did do a “Style Tip of the Day: How to Look Better in Comfy Clothes.” Why don’t you take a look and let me know if that fits the bill for you.
I love the look of the shawl collar one. Now that I’ve lost some weight I should look into a blazer in that style.
I’m glad to hear that this inspired you to get something new. Congratulations on your weight loss! Even if it wasn’t under the healthiest of circumstances, it’s still nice to let go of extra weight. I’ll bet you look fabulous 😉
I was a big blazer girl in my 20-30’s. I had so many to go with dresses for work and with jeans for weekends!
Sounds like they were useful and beloved!
