How to Put Your Own Spin on the Menswear Look
For women, menswear is a pairing of opposites. Usually, menswear style for women is masculine mixed with feminine. But there are a lot more possibilities than that when you take the masculine, conservative, businesslike, structured qualities of menswear and experiment with styles that are simply the opposite. Age doesn’t matter. From the simplest, easiest ways to style menswear to six ways to mix it, six style tips and 12 outfit ideas…I hope that this post helps you to see how to put your own spin on the menswear look.
Going all in can be chic, but it takes a lot of confidence to pull it off. Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn are role models to show you how that’s done.
It’s a lot easier to mix in a few feminine pieces with your tailoring, such as sexy shoes, a delicate camisole or long earrings. Or start with something feminine like a silky dress and add menswear accessories like a big watch, a fedora or heeled loafers.
In the end, I’m going to say that you can put your own spin on the menswear look by mixing masculine pieces with whatever style you love best. That is, as long as it’s opposite to the structured, businesslike, masculine qualities of men’s suiting. For instance, you can add bohemian, romantic, girly or rock style with accessories.
How to put your own spin on masculine style, 6 ways:
- Mix a tailored top or bottom with a slouchy opposite.
- Inject feminine details. Mix your menswear-style jackets and blazers with feminine elements (i.e., a wool pinstripe blazer with a sheer ruffled blouse or cocktail dress.)
- Mix a feminine jacket or blazer with a tailored top and pants, or with a simple sheath.
- For a rock style, you can try pairing black (faux) leather, animal-print, studs, skulls, etc. to menswear pieces.
- For a bohemian spin, mix menswear with an ethnic pattern. You can also add boho accessories, tops or bottoms to blazers, trousers or vests.
- Contrast the businesslike vibe of menswear clothing with street style.
How to Put Your Own Spin on the Menswear Look
Here are some things to borrow from the boys:
- slouchy trousers
- draped men’s shirts
- blazers, both oversize and fitted
6 Style Tips
Tip #1: Shop in the men’s or boys’ departments for finds like oversize knits and shrunken blazers.
Tip #2: Take a borrowed-from-the-boys jacket (i.e., plaid, etc.) Add girly touches, like a fur hat and brightly colored gloves.
Tip #3: Pair tailored trousers with any top (i.e., dress them up with a jacket or blouse & heels, dress them down with a t-shirt and great jewelry, etc.)
Tip #5: Pair brown tweed with neutral or autumnal color schemes.
Tip #6: You can wear a blazer with any bottoms.

So many great styling ideas, Angie! I love menswear inspired outfits and I really, really love the contrast of a menswear piece with something super feminine…like the blazer with that amazing lace skirt in the first photo. Oh, now my creativity is running wild! I need to put together some menswear inspired looks soon. Thanks for sharing and linking up.
