How to Style Pajamas as Daywear: 10 Ways
While self-quarantining at home, this is the perfect time to explore how to style pajamas as daywear. And then as we gather in public again, this is always a comfortable style that can be made chic for around town and for evenings. Age doesn’t matter!
So today I’d like to explore ten ways to wear pajamas as daywear, along with some tips to help inspire you further. Even if you stay at home, you’ll look like you’re actually dressed! Best of all, you can drop into bed at the end of a tiring day without changing…or rather, my favorite is to get up in the morning already dressed. 😉 All you have to do is accessorize for day.
When my kids were in high school, the girls started wearing pajama pants to school in place of their regular pants, skirts or jeans. And they managed to look perfectly normal. After that, I learned from my daughter that I could go about town in pajama pants as long as they looked presentable (such as plaid, etc.) So if I was just going to run out to the store or something like that, I would wear a t-shirt and a pair of plaid pajama pants with street shoes and accessories.
In the last few years, designers have been creating pajama sets for day that are made of luxe materials and look quite glamorous. For instance, the Johnny Was catalog sells some nice ones (see above.) An updated pajama set can be made of satin or velvet. And a velvet pajama set that has a camisole top can actually be used year round.
5 Tips on How to Style Pajamas as Daywear:
- Adding a structured or glam jacket over a pajama set offsets the casual feel.
- A big t-shirt disguises a nightgown – or pajama pants – for daywear.
- Silk, satin or velvet pajama pants with a matching camisole or top can go out on the town with a jacket and heels.
- Any footwear with a heel will look more like daytime. Flat heels will tend to be reminiscent of house slippers.
- The easiest way to avoid the bedroom connotation of pajamas is to use just the top or bottom.
How to Style Pajamas as Day Wear…and for Evening
- A slip dress type of nightgown + a denim jacket will make you look stylish and comfortable.
- A sleeper robe can take on the role of a summer coat.
- Add your pajama bottoms to a fitted tank or tee and wedges for an elegant day look.
- Pajama pants + a biker jacket.
- A sleep robe or kimono can upgrade the look of sweats or athleisure pieces.
- Belt a sleep robe to create a wrap dress.
- A graphic tee + pajama pants + a blazer. Add sandals + necklace + bracelets.
- A pajama top + jeans.
- A white tee + pajama pants.
- A big comfy sweater + pajama pants. Or, a try a nice sweater + satin, silk, velvet or leopard-print pajama pants + heels with a pendant, bangle and hoop earrings.
Bonus: How to Wear Pajama Pants Out for the Evening
- Throw on a pajama jacket with skinny jeans and heels at night.
- Wear a metallic top with velvet pajama pants.

That’s right; there are so many pajamas available that are beautiful enough to wear out of the house. I guess if we see some, we should remind ourselves to pick them up! Comfort is king (or should I say queen? ;))
All of your photo examples are beautiful! I love the idea of using pajama wear for daytime. I’ve done it with a handful of my pajamas tops with jeans or shorts!
Ah, so it sounds like you’re right on time with modern life!
I love the Johnny Was and Anthropologie picks! These are fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing these, Angie!
I hope you find a pick for yourself and enjoy the beauty of comfort!
Years ago, I had a pajama top, red satin button down with black piping and a finished bottom, that I used to wear as a blouse. I loved it. Now I only wear nightgowns, but these ideas are terrific if I found the right pj top!
I hope you do! Red satin sounds perfect for an easy evening.
I’ve often thought there would be no way to tell a beautiful floral robe from a kimono. I could totally embrace the pajama as daywear concept.

You’re right! A beautiful floral robe could make a great evening dress if it’s in the right material. All you’d have to do is wrap it over a slip, add a fancy belt and evening accessories.
I’m going to make some palazzo pants and my first choice of tops is a pj style. Perfect timing!
I’m impressed! Let me know when your outfit is finished and I’ll share it on Facebook 🙂
