9 of the Best Ways to Wear a Velvet Kimono or Duster
This is the fourth in a series of posts on how to add a touch of luxury to your outfits with velvet. Previously, I wrote a style tip and how to style a velvet jacket or top. You can find those subjects linked at the bottom of this post along with another that I wrote for my Holiday Series (HERE.) I have gotten lots of positive feedback on my kimono outfit ideas (HERE) so I know that kimonos are popular. Age doesn’t matter! First of all, kimonos and dusters cloak your body in comfort. Secondly, they’re that all-important third piece that takes a basic two-piece outfit from plain to spectacular effortlessly. Ultimately that makes them a go-to item for the holidays, whether you have a special event or you just want to feel festive at home. So with all that goodness in mind, let’s take a look at nine of the best ways to wear a kimono or duster.
9 of the Best Ways to Wear a Kimono or Duster
You can wear a kimono or duster over any top and bottom. This makes it easy to dress up whatever you have on. It doesn’t matter if: a) you want to look special for somewhere you’re going, or b) you just feel bored with an outfit and want to make it more interesting.
Here are nine outfit ideas:
You Can Wear It with a Dress
- Holiday: A maxi dress + a velvet duster. You might like to add gold jewelry for extra elegance.
- A dress + a velvet kimono.
- A velvet kimono or blazer + a velvet dress. Add a pendant.
You Can Wear It with a Skirt
- A velvet duster over a similar-color graphic t-shirt + a toned tiered skirt or a long skirt in a special fabric. Add boots. You might like to add a narrow scarf or animal-print accessory.
- A long-sleeve t-shirt tucked into a faux leather skirt + a velvet kimono. Add boots.
- A blouse + a velvet skirt + a velvet kimono or duster.
You Can Wear It with Pants or Jeans
- A white tee or tank + blue jeans + a velvet duster or kimono. Add heels and maybe some delicate gold necklaces.
- A velvet duster or kimono + a sweater + skinny jeans of any color. Add blat ankle boots + a pendant + a shorter strand of crystals.
- A gray graphic tank or tee + a gray/silver duster or kimono + blue jeans + booties. You could use any color duster with a matching color tee, graphic or not.
So there you have it, as easy as 1,2,3:
- three ways to wear a kimono or duster with a dress,
- three ways to wear it with a skirt, and
- three ways to wear it with pants or jeans.
And that makes nine of the best ways to wear a velvet kimono or duster! Do you have more ideas to share with us? What are your favorite ways to wear it? I’d love to have you share with us. Please leave a reply below.

Those kimonos are so chic! I wish I had an occasion to wear one but we haven’t gone out anywhere in so long 🙁
Hi, Anastasia – I’ve worn my gray/silver velvet duster over casual clothes (like jeans and a tee or joggers or lounge pants) lately around the house in place of a cardigan. Pretend it’s a robe and enjoy! 😉
I love kimonos, and these are chic and versatile looks! EXCELLENT picks, Angie!
Thanks, Lola, yes…these are chic and glamorous pieces to have in your wardrobe!
I am a long time fan of kimonos. I bought a lightweight one for warmer weather a couple of years ago that I have worn a few times. I hope I’ll have opportunities to wear it again in the spring and summer. I’m drooling over the Kendra Kimono in the photo that you posted!!
There are so many beautiful velvet kimonos. In fact, now that I think of it, I should probably get a new one in a warm material to use as a robe or cardi around the house!
