How to Style Palazzo Pants Your Own Special Way
Palazzo pants are 70’s inspired and have a bohemian, exotic aura to them. If you prefer, you can lose that impression by pairing them with something more to your liking. For instance, if your style is more sporty, modern, businesslike or preppy then you can mix palazzo pants with those elements to make them your own. Age doesn’t matter, since you can style palazzo pants in your own special way.
You can dress them up for evening, dress them down for around the house, add sandals in the summer or boots in the winter. Palazzos are loose and airy for summer. They can even be comfy lounge pants if you like! A pair of chiffon palazzo pants are great to have on hand for any evening event. Effortlessly chic, they can move like a long skirt.
In this post, I will share with you:
- how to get the right silhouette with these voluminous pants,
- what shoes go with them,
- the right length and
- lots of outfit ideas for spring and summer, fall and winter, evening and anytime.
So let’s take a look at how to style palazzo pants!
How to Style Palazzo Pant With the Right Silhouette
Wear a fitted top to balance out the flowing width of palazzo pants. A fitted tee is the most basic way to do this. If you like wearing a crop top, it will balance out the width of your palazzo pants.
On the other hand, a flowing tunic over palazzo pants is comfy and can give an easy bohemian, ethnic feel as well. When you want to wear a tunic over them, think Indian style.
You could wear any top you like and then add structure by topping with a jacket or vest. Or if the top is not fitted, try belting it.
What Shoes to Wear
Although you could wear flat sandals with palazzo pants, shoes with a little lift work best. Wedge sandals or clogs or a boot or shoe with a chunky heel go well with these pants. Beware of stiletto heels, because they could catch on the swishing volume of the pants and trip you! They’ll only work if the hem is short enough to show your ankles in sandals, or perhaps you might like to show off some killer heeled boots.
When wearing flat sandals, you will get more of an ethnic look, like you live in the desert. Think embellished or exotic.
What Is the Best Length?
Make sure the length of your palazzo pants are just right. If you already have them and they are too short to look right or they are so long that they are tripping you, take them to a seamstress to get them just right. The hem should just barely touch the floor.
How to Style Palazzo Pants: Outfit Ideas
The following outfit ideas are divided into three parts according to the weather, with a special section for evenings. I’ve always organized my outfit ideas by season and it makes it easy for me to come up with what to wear every day. This is how I’m presenting these outfit combinations below:
- The first category below is for outfits that can be worn flexibly at various times of the year.
- The second category is for spring and summer outfits.
- The third category is for fall and winter.
- At the end, there are a few ideas just for evening.
Anytime
- Top a scoop-neck top & palazzo pants with a waterfall cardigan or blazer. Add a necklace or two + a cuff or bracelet + heels or wedges.
- A statement top + palazzo pants.
- A wrap/crossover top + palazzo pants.
- Try a hip-skimming top + palazzo pants.
- A duster over a top half tucked into palazzo pants. Add a jumble of necklaces and bracelets (i.e., tassel necklaces, bracelets with coins and charms). The duster and pants can be embroidered or printed, as long as the colors coordinate. Alternatively, you could take any color palazzo pants and just match the duster to a color in the pants.
- An oversize or voluminous top tucked or belted + palazzo pants.
- A short-sleeve or long-sleeve t-shirt + palazzo pants. Add a chunky chain necklace & earrings.
- Wear a vest + palazzo pants + any top under the vest.
- A fitted black top + black palazzo pants. (Or any color palazzo pants with a matching color fitted top — this creates a slim silhouette.)
- A simple, sexy top with palazzo pants. You may want to top this with a chic blazer or jacket.
- Belt a simple white blouse over palazzo pants.
- A fitted shirt + printed or solid palazzo pants.
- A long, loose blouse belted over palazzo pants in a matching color.
- Pair a wrap shirt with palazzo pants. Add pumps + a chunky chain necklace + a gold cuff, bangle, gold watch and/or gold & brown bangle.
Spring and Summer
- A tunic over palazzo pants.
- Transition to Spring: A knit blazer + a tank top + palazzo pants. Add a delicate gold pendant. You may also want to add a straw fedora + loads of gold bangles with a watch on wrists + pumps.

- Spring: A long sweater over printed palazzo pants. Add a statement necklace + sandals + a cuff bracelet.
- Spring: A fitted khaki jacket + palazzo pants. You may like to add a leopard-print scarf.
- A black printed kimono + black palazzo pants. Add black sandals with a chunky heel + layered gold necklaces + gold earrings.
- A duster + a lightweight top + palazzo pants. Add sandals.
- Top a scoop-neck top & palazzo pants with a fringed kimono. Then, you could add gold sandals, a statement necklace or a long delicate pendant.
- A white shirt (silk, sheer, cotton, etc.) + printed palazzo pants. If silk, tuck in the shirt. Roll up cuffs. Add a charm bracelet + heeled sandals.
- A lacy camisole + palazzo pants + a draped cardigan. Add espadrilles + a choker or short necklace in neckline.
- Pair a camisole + palazzo pants. Add bangles.
- A floaty top + palazzo pants. Add flat sandals. You may also like to add a coin necklace + a bracelet or two.

- Wear a longer-length top over palazzo pants topped by a matching-color, drape-front cardigan. Add a long pendant + heeled sandals.
- A structured, fitted top + palazzo pants. Add platform wedges or chunky heeled sandals.
- Palazzo pants + fitted tanks or sheer, flowing blouses. Adding a jacket or blazer polishes the look. You may also like to add chunky heels or wedges.
- A peasant top + palazzo pants. Add sandals + a headband or head wrap + a pendant + a lightweight scarf + beads + a purse: all toned to the colors of the top and pants.
- Take two different color tank tops toned to the color of your palazzo pants. Add a braided belt + a necklace on a cord + a cord wrap bracelet + flat sandals.
- A loose tank top + palazzo pants. Add a long necklace + a straw fedora + flat sandals.
- A sheer or lace top + palazzo pants. You may want to top this with a jacket or blazer.
- Top a lace or crochet top with a duster (if it has lace or crochet, all the better) over palazzo pants.
- A white tee front-tucked into printed palazzo pants + a classic black blazer. Add nude heeled sandals + bracelets + sunglasses if sunny.
- A graphic tee + palazzo pants.
Fall and Winter

These outfits are absolutely GORGEOUS! I love the one from Johnny Was!
The duster over an embroidered top and tiered palazzo pants from Johnny Was is indeed a lovely style. The tiered pants are very popular, too. I hope this post inspired you to create some outfits with palazzos. If you don’t have any, I’m sure there’s a style out there that you will love!
These outfits are stunning! Back in the mid-70s, I was such a fan. I’ll have to consider palazzo pants for this summer
Hi, Allison – I especially like palazzo pants in summer because they are light and flowy. I have really come to love flowing through hot days. Lol! – XO, Angie
