Color Style Tips: How to Wear Shades of White Now and Into Fall
It may seem that summer is coming to an end with Labor Day and back-to-school preparations. But this year’s autumn equinox isn’t until September 23rd. And if recent years are an indication, the weather will still be quite warm until then. During these last days of summer, you can keep tropical weather and last-minute vacations in mind by looking the part. After Labor Day, you can start in on Fall colors if you like but it’s not necessary if the weather is 80 degrees Fahrenheit! The equinox will come and then there will be time enough to dress in the Fall spirit. So I chose my style tips of the day to focus on how to wear shades of white now and into Fall.
The rule of no white after Labor Day is broken. There are different ways to wear it during every season of the year. Age doesn’t matter. Here are two color style tips: one for wearing white now and one for wearing white into fall.
Color Style Tip: How to Wear Shades of White Now
During the Summer:
To a white outfit, add tropical color such as: orange, peacock blue, aquamarine….Any shade of white – or a mix of white, ivory, cream, etc. – can be worn. Color can be added in the form of a camisole, tank, cardigan, kimono or accessory.
Color Style Tip: How to Wear Shades of White for Fall
During Autumn:
To a white outfit, add Fall hues such as: orange, red, rust, mustard yellow, navy, teal, purple, gray, burgundy. Or pair with the neutral fall colors which are the earth tones, such as: chocolate brown, olive green, sage green, camel. As in the tip above, any shade of white – or a mix of whites, ivory, cream, etc. – can be worn. And then color can be added in the form of a camisole, tank, cardigan, jacket or accessory.
Bonus Color Style Tip: The Most Popular Way to Wear Shades of White Anytime
At any time of the year:
Black is a great color pairing with white to take spring and summer outfits into fall and winter. Just switch from cool, smooth, sheer, lightweight fabrics to warmer, heavier textures and fabrics to go from one season to the next. And then, change from sandals to boots and scarves. Keep to a monochrome theme in shades of black, white and even gray.
No matter which of these style tips you choose, when you wear a white top and white bottom you are creating a slimming column of color.

These are such gorgeous Autumn looks, and it is so nice that the wearing white after Labor Day rule went away!
Yes, that rule was similar to what we have now where everyone tries to wear fall clothes after Labor Day. It’s supposed to be our uniform signifying the beginning of autumn, which doesn’t begin in actuality until the third week of September. With global warming, autumn weather doesn’t happen before the equinox like it used to…
