20 Ways a Poncho Can Make Your Outfit Special
Ponchos are a third piece to take a basic outfit to special territory as ruanas, shawls and other toppers do. The poncho is roomy, somewhat airy and flows around you in a layer of comfort. There are warm ponchos for fall that can be layered for winter, and there are light, thin, open-knit weaves for spring or even the beach. So the season doesn’t matter; the style doesn’t matter; age doesn’t matter; and body type doesn’t matter either. This piece is forgiving. So I have come up with 20 ways a poncho can make your outfit special to help you enjoy this piece to the max!
Since the poncho also has a boho or arty aura to it, consider this poetic musing:
“Raindrops on roses weren’t her thing.
They were okay.
But patchouli and pine
Curry and cloves
Burnt orange dusks fading to midnight blue slumber
Alto strings and reeds weaving symphonic tapestries in minor keys
Woolen ponchos and leather boots and prairie skirts sewn from bandanas line
dried for the hundredth time to soft perfection
These were a few of her favorite things…”
From “Fairy Tale – Part 1” by Nancy Jones
You can throw a poncho over whatever you’re wearing, like a jacket on your way out the door on a cool day. It’s easy to use it as a topper over the quintessential jeans and a tee with sneakers. But if you’d like to create an outfit with your poncho, here are some further ideas on how to style it.
20 Ways to Style a Poncho
With a Dress:
Hint: this a good way to use a body-conscious dress that you might not otherwise feel confident wearing!
- Wear a poncho over a summer dress. Add tall boots + short and long delicate gold pendants + narrow gold bangles with a big gold watch.
- A poncho over a black or white dress. Add a colorful pendant, like turquoise, on a long black cord.
- A poncho over a slip dress.
With Jeans:
- A poncho + a tunic-length t-shirt + destroyed skinny jeans. Add a long and short delicate gold necklace + bracelets.
- A poncho + a thermal top in a color to match + skinny blue jeans. Add ankle boots + a beanie.
- A poncho + a sweater or tee in a matching color + blue jeans. Add ankle boots + a couple of long pendants + a watch layered with bracelets + a ring + minimal earrings.
- A poncho + blue jeans + any top. Add taupe boots or clogs + a statement collar necklace + earrings + bracelets. Or, add flat tan boots + a long turquoise pendant + earrings.
- A poncho + a tunic top + skinny jeans or jeggings. Add tall boots with a heel + a long statement pendant + big/long earrings toned to the necklace. Or, add a beautiful scarf over the poncho + big hoop earrings + a watch + ankle boots with a heel.
- A poncho + a black or white turtleneck + blue jeans. Add tan or brown ankle boots with a heel + turquoise & silver bracelets.
- A poncho over a striped tee + blue jeans. Add over-the-knee boots.
With Various Types of Pants:
- A poncho over a camisole, tee or shirt over olive pants. You may then add a pendant, earrings and/or scarf.
- A poncho + a long-sleeve t-shirt toned to the color of the poncho + trousers in a color to match. Add flat ankle boots.
- A poncho + matching-color palazzos or yoga pants + any top. Add heeled booties.
- A poncho over a column of color, such as a black top and black bottom or any matching-color top and bottom.
- A gray poncho + gray or black pants + any top. Add a big coppery necklace + matching earrings or hoop earrings + a few bangles.
With Skinnies:
- A poncho over a long-sleeve t-shirt and skinnies of the same color (i.e., white top & bottom or black top & bottom). Add over-the-knee boots. If cool, you might also like to add a woolly hat and gloves.
- A poncho + black skinnies + any top. Add a bright scarf + riding boots + a wrap bracelet.
With Leggings:
- A poncho + solid or printed leggings + any top.
- Monotone Look: A poncho + a turtleneck and leggings to match the poncho. Add tall boots (especially fringed!) + embellished hoop earrings or other statement earrings.
With Skirts:
- A poncho + a faux leather skirt or pants. Add ankle boots + a statement necklace.
- For cool mornings and evenings, spring and summer: A poncho over a black jersey skirt and any top. Add wedge sandals or wedge espadrilles.

Thanks for featuring me! This post is very complementary to my latest post about styling 3 ponchos. Thanks for linking Angie!
You’re welcome, Gail! You present an awesome example of how to style a poncho. XO, Angie
I am a fan of ponchos. I have crocheted at least 4 of them. I wear them in the house mostly because outdoor poncho weather lasts about two days in Massachusetts. And wearing them underneath a coat just doesn’t work
I know what you mean. I feel the same way about a kimono under a coat. But a poncho can go over a jacket, which just occurred to me so I’ll have to try it. Also, I have to remember to cozy up with one in the house because my habit is to reach for a shawl every day. I’d love to see your handmade ponchos. What a great talent to have!
I love these looks! What a perfect idea for this season, too!
Thanks, Lola! The poncho is a perfect light layer and nice for in front of a fire or over a jacket too.
I had forgotten how much I love ponchos until I saw these photos. You always have great styling ideas. 😍
Thanks, and I’ll bet you look good in ponchos!
I just purchased a poncho a couple weeks ago. What a timely article, Angie!
We must be psychic…or it’s Autumn! Lol
