6th in a Series of Velvet Outfit Ideas: How to Style a Velvet Dress
Every year during the holiday season, between Thanksgiving and New Year, I do a series of festive outfit ideas. Last year, the series was on velvet: velvet tops, velvet bottoms, velvet coverups and a style tip for how to wear velvet every day. You can find the links to these posts below this article. There are so many ways to wear velvet that after doing a blog post each week, I still had a few more blog posts to do to finish last year’s series. So this is the sixth in my series of velvet outfit ideas. Next week, I will finish the series with lots of outfit combinations using a velvet skirt. Then I will start a new series based on lace.
You can style velvet of all sorts, from velour to silk velvet, in casual ways as well as in dressed-up looks. I have outfit ideas that encompass the spectrum of possibilities. Age doesn’t matter. I hope that you’ll enjoy creating new ways of putting together the things you have and the new things you purchase.
How to Style a Velvet Dress
- A velvet dress + tall boots. Add a long necklace, such as a gold tassel necklace, or a pendant on a gold chain or black cord. You may then want to top it off with a motorcycle jacket.
- Or top a velvet dress with a black motorcycle jacket and add black ankle boots.
- You can cover up a body-conscious velvet dress with a faux leather jacket and dress it down with sneakers.
- Start with the basic outfit of a velvet dress and pumps. Add a statement necklace, mixed bangles and sparkling stud earrings.
- Wear any piece of statement jewelry to a velvet dress such as earrings, bracelets or cuffs, a necklace, a brooch, etc.
- Add a lace scarf to a velvet dress.
- A velvet dress + black tights and tall black boots.
- With a long or short velvet dress, try wearing fringed boots, Western boots, combat-style boots or motorcycle boots.
- A velvet dress + black tights + black flats. Add a gold multi-chain necklace + delicate gold earrings.
- A blazer, classic or knit, over a velvet dress + sling-back pumps + your favorite jewelry.
- Top a velvet dress with any color velvet blazer.
- A velvet slip dress over a matching color long-sleeve t-shirt . Add casual footwear.
- Dress down a velvet dress with a jean jacket. Add short wedge booties and tights. You might want to add a knit beanie for warmth or a red cross-body bag for a pop of color.

What absolutely gorgeous velvet dresses! I would love to find a nice royal purple velvet top!
I hope you do find the velvet top you’re looking for! Once you do, you could see my post on how to style velvet tops in order to enjoy wearing it in all sorts of ways. 😉
I have one top in velvet and I treasure it. Having a shedding dog doesn’t make it easy for me to wear but when I do I change as soon as I get home. These dresses are so beautiful.
If you haven’t seen it, there is a post in my velvet style series on how to wear velvet tops in all sorts of ways. I can imagine that a velvet top is much more wearable than a velvet dress when you have a dog. In such a case, the dress could only go out to special occasions. Thanks so much for checking out this post and for commenting, too!
I’m drooling looking at these gorgeous velvet dresses! The purple one is calling to me. I guess I’m old-fashioned coz I just can’t do velvet or any dress for that matter with sneakers, lol
How about combat boots? Lol! Always remember, though, age doesn’t matter 😉
I really love it with the sneakers and combat boots for some reason. It seems so modern and fun!!!

They make a classic evening piece comfortable and able to go anywhere. That’s why the combat boots are trending after Covid lockdowns. They’re easy to walk in, especially through cold-weather terrain.
I don’t have anything velvet in my closet and need to change that! Love the look of velvet maxi dresses styled with sneakers or boots!

I’m so glad to hear that! I love it too, but I was wondering if it would appeal to others in my age group as well. We bloggers are living proof that age really doesn’t matter. 😉
