7th in a Series of Velvet Outfit Ideas: How to Style Velvet Skirts
This is the 7th in a series of velvet outfit ideas. I started the series last year over the holidays with posts on outfit combinations using velvet tops, velvet bottoms, velvet coverups and a style tip for how to wear velvet every day. You can find the links to those posts below this article. This one is all about how to style velvet skirts. I have over 40 ways to wear them listed here. Age doesn’t matter.
I love to come up with new outfit combinations all the time but will never be able to wear all of them! So I’m sharing my ideas so that you, too, can constantly make your clothes look new. Just put your own spin on these outfits to show your true self!
How to Style Velvet Skirts
Please feel free to adapt these velvet skirt outfit ideas to the specific colors, textures and pieces that you own. By textures, I mean that velveteen and velour can be used in place of velvet if the occasion doesn’t call for something too fancy.
- For a Museum Opening, Concert or Restaurant Dinner Party: A black velvet cape or topper + a black velvet skirt + a bare black silk camisole. Add black satin sandals + a black satin ribbon tied in a bow at your waist. Add gold accessories.
- With a velvet skirt, wear a collared blouse or pearls for a vintage look.
- Top a black blouse and a long black velvet skirt with a cardigan in a color, such as teal. Add tights & riding boots + gold earrings + a scarf.
- A black crewneck and cardigan + a velvet skirt. Add gold jewelry.
- Any sweater + a velvet skirt.
- A chunky sweater or turtleneck + a velvet skirt.
- A black crewneck sweater tucked inside a black velvet maxi skirt. Add black satin pumps + a black belt with an embellished buckle + lots of gold jewelry + a red wrap (shawl, scarf, etc.)
- A black sweater over a black velvet maxi skirt. Add flat, black ankle boots with socks.
- A turtleneck + a velvet skirt, short or long. Add wool tights or textured stockings or sheer black hose + black ankle boots + a necklace or a beautiful silk scarf.
- A sequin-trim blouse + a velvet skirt. Add a belt + boots + a scarf.
- A blouse + a velvet skirt + pumps. To dress this look up even more, the blouse could be silk and/or a color to match the skirt.
- A blouse in a matching color to a velvet skirt. Add a belt + a bracelet + pumps.
- A feminine blouse + a velvet skirt + heels.
- A black velvet skirt + an embellished black t-shirt + a jean jacket. Embellish the jacket with brooches. Add dangle earrings + black leather boots.
- A t-shirt + a black velvet maxi skirt + a black moto jacket with the sleeves rolled back. Add black boots with a heel + a long tassel or rosary necklace layered with a shorter necklace.
- A graphic tee + a long or short velvet skirt + a moto jacket. Add statement earrings + heels.
- A velvet skirt + any t-shirt.
- Belt a brown safari jacket over a brown shirt and a black velvet skirt. Add tall black boots.
- A shrunken jacket + a snug knit or thin tank top tucked inside a velvet maxi skirt.
- A long-sleeve lace top + a velvet skirt.
A Short Velveteen or Velvet Skirt
A short velveteen skirt is a casual take on the velvet skirt. Yet it can also be dressed up for casual evenings or work days. Use it interchangeably with velvet in the following outfit combinations.
- Day to Evening: An Eastern Indian printed and/or embellished tunic worn inside a short velvet or velveteen skirt.
- For the Office, School Meetings, Etc.: A navy blouse (or any shade of blue, including prints) + a short, navy velvet skirt. Add a belt, shoes and nude hose. Tie a small silk scarf at your neck or wear amber-toned beads with gold bracelets. You might like to turn back the cuffs of the blouse. For cooler weather, add another tone of jacket (i.e., brown or gray) or a tan trench-coat.
- A Bohemian top + a short velvet skirt. Boots go well with this.
- A short velvet skirt + a plaid blazer + a long-sleeve cotton top.
- A jean jacket + a short velvet or velvet skirt + any top.
- A black velvet jacket or blazer + a short velvet skirt + a black printed top. Add tall tan boots + sparkly hoop earrings & bracelet.
- A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black sweater + a short navy velvet skirt. Add brown shoes & bag and jewelry of your choice.
- A brown jacket + a red sweater or blouse + a short navy velvet skirt. Add a light brown/tan belt & shoe and wood & gold jewelry.
- A black or gray cardigan + matching color shell top + a short velvet skirt. Add a belt.
- A navy turtleneck + a short navy velvet skirt. Add a pretty clip to the edge of the turtleneck near the collarbone. After that, you could add a brown, gray, beige or camel jacket or cardigan over. You might also like to belt the cardigan.
- A moto jacket + a short or long velvet skirt + a top of your choice.
- A long-sleeve Henley top tucked into a short velvet skirt. Add a woven/artisan belt + tights + a cuff bracelet. You might like to top it off with a fedora or hat with a brim.
- A plaid shirt + a short velvet skirt.
- A sweater + a short velvet skirt. Add riding boots + a woolly plaid scarf.
- A sweater + a short velvet skirt. Add a long, fringed scarf (cloth or woolly) + boots + jewelry.
- A scoop-neck top tucked inside a short velvet skirt + a moto jacket. Add a statement necklace.
- A blouse + a short velvet skirt.
- A gold blouse + a short navy (or other neutral color) velvet skirt + a black cardigan. Add black opaque stockings and black footwear.
- A printed blouse tucked into a short velvet skirt. Add a chain-link bag + heels. You might like to add a bracelet.
- A gray shirt tucked into a navy velvet skirt. Add a narrow belt + a leather wrap bracelet. Flip back the cuffs and push back the sleeves of the shirt.
- A shirt (short sleeves or long sleeves, jersey knit or cotton) tucked into a short velvet skirt.
Next week, I planned to wrap up this series with a style tip using velvet. But the ideas keep coming! So there may be a few more weeks of style tips for wearing velvet pieces. Stay tuned. 😉

I absolutely love velvet, and it looks great and it feels so wonderful!
You’re right: it’s a feel-good fabric that is elegant yet comfortable…great for day to evening!
I love velvet, it feels so luxurious. I should be looking into adding something beautiful like you’ve shown.
Yes you should, Marcia, because you deserve it! <3
I love that red velvet skirt! So lovely!
Red seems to be hot right now; maybe because of the holidays. But as you can see in my post, it can be worn in casual ways. It’s actually quite adaptable.
I absolutely LOVE how all the red velvet skirts were styled! I love velvet. I just got my daughter a red velvet dress and now I feel I need some velvet in my life too!
Yes, don’t forget yourself! Right now, especially, you can pick up velvet for less during holiday sales and then in January during post-holiday sales. There are basic pieces in neutrals such as black or navy…in fact, my son bought me a brown velvet tunic with gold accents. These basics can be worn all winter, day to evening. And then remember to come back to get outfit combinations for your new acquisition, since I have a whole series covering whatever you collect. 😉
I love velvet, especially the red/burgundy velvets being styled in a couple of the photos you are showing. So beautiful. I have a red velvet top as well as a purple one that I should take out and wear. I will read your other velvet posts for ideas
My post on velvet tops has lots of outfit ideas for you! These posts are made to help you get more use out of your clothes…in this case, your two velvet tops. Thanks for visiting!
