It’s Always a Good Time to Explore Hygge Style Because Comfort is Key
Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish concept based on living cozily and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. It is a mindful and minimalist way of life. It applies to all aspects of life including home, work, relationships, parenting, holidays, food and clothes. At a time when we are enjoying comfortable clothes in all aspects of our lives, I decided it’s a good time to explore hygge style. Since comfort is key, age doesn’t matter!
Hygge: Comfort Over Style
The clothes that exude hygge style are anything cozy, comfy and warm. So winter is an especially good time to wear this comfort-over-style look. But comfort is important all year, so there are tips for all four seasons below.
The most important goal in the hygge lifestyle is relaxation. Clothes that make you feel good are more important than ones that look good but are uncomfortable.
However, you don’t have to throw style out the window. There are a number of chic outfit combinations in the section “20 Hygge Outfit Ideas” below.
Which Clothes Have Hygge Style?
Hygge focuses on natural colors and materials, whether for clothes or home decor.
Here are clothes that give a hygge feeling. Try using these to create outfits that you enjoy:

A Few Hygge Tips for Your Clothes
In the book The Danish Secrets of Happiness: How to Be Happy and Healthy in Your Daily Life by Maya Thoresen in the chapter on “Hygge Self-Care,” this is one of her recommendations:
“Treat yourself to a new shirt, pair of pants, or whole outfit. Don’t overdo it when it comes to the price tag, but pick something that complements your style and makes you feel good to wear it.”
To minimize a cluttered closet, here’s a tip from the chapter “Hygge Principles”:
“…hang your clothes backward. When you wear clothes and put them away again, hang them the right way. At the end of the year, if there are any clothes left that are still facing the wrong way, you know that you never wore them. You can probably get rid of them without regret now.”
And here are more tips with quotes from the book:
- Keep your clothes simple and functional. “Wearing simple, clean, quality clothes is essential to your comfort. Clothes with pockets are useful for carrying things.
- “Go for a good fit, not a tight fit.“
- For spring, excellent hygge choices are soft fabrics, in pastels and muted earth tones, with a roomy fit. Don’t forget a jacket when transitioning to spring. This is the best time of year to organize your closets and get rid of anything you may not have worn or used over the past year.
- In summer, choose shorts or skirts for an airy feeling. “Pick tank tops and t-shirts and bring along a light jacket or sweater for cooler nights. At this time of year, it can be fun to dress in bold, vibrant colors, so be sure you pick colors that make you feel comfortable and happy….Cotton is light and breathable during summer…You can get the most out of sweat-wicking polyester when you are engaged in strenuous tasks or sports.” And don’t feel pressured to wear fashionable swimsuits if they are not comfortable.
- Autumn “is a wonderful time of year for wearing some of your most comfortable clothing, so don’t forget to bring out those light, soft sweaters and other cozy clothes that embody the hygge spirit. Most clothes and decorations at this time of year are available in warm, earthy colors” such as brown, gray and cream “that enhance the feeling of hygge when you see them. Stick to these autumn shades whenever possible….You’ll want to dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing as needed…You may also need to have a raincoat handy.” Remember to choose comfort over style when choosing boots and shoes.
- In the winter, “bring out your comfy sweaters, sweatpants and slippers….Warm wool and wool blends are nice during winter…Go with soft, plush fabrics and be sure to wear a coat that’s lined for extra comfort….Try wearing stockings or very thick socks with your outfits to keep your feet and legs warm and toasty. And don’t neglect your hands and face! Wear gloves and a scarf and hat…try knitting or crocheting these items yourself.”
- “Have a relaxing stay-in-your-pajamas day. If you have to work and can’t make time for a whole day, try spending your free time after work in your pajamas instead.”
- “Take a walk around the neighborhood in sweatpants and a comfortable shirt. Take time to feel the breeze and make note of the smells and sounds around you.”

Yes, I guess hygge style can be fun as well as cozy. Of course, it’s all about feeling good!
Yes, especially for winter! I just bought an Eddie Bauer 1/4 zip top made from a soft, pink patterned fabric. I have never owned anything like this, but it’s so cozy and warm. And I found a fleece-ish black moto style jacket in my closet that I forgot I bought a couple of years ago – again so cozy and warm! Loved this post!
Glad you liked it! I hope you can use some outfit ideas from this post to style your cozy pieces. Snuggle up and stay warm in your comfy clothes while the weather rages outside!
I love it! It feels like the idea is to be cozy!
Yes and throughout the entire year, the idea is to focus on feeling good 😉
Comfort is key, but it certainly doesn’t mean that your outfit has to be frumpy, as you so beautifully demonstrated in this post! Very nicely done! These look so cozy for the season, too!
My thoughts exactly and thanks for the compliment! 🙂
