Style Tip of the Day: Here’s How to Mix Textures for Rich Outfits

In this installment of my Style Tips Series (HERE),  I have lots of examples to show how amazing your outfits can look when you mix textures. They will end up having a luxurious and fresh feeling of richness. In many cases, they will also feel cozy. I hope that this tip and the looks throughout this post will inspire you to create your own unique outfits that show your true self. I encourage you to shop your own closet to find ways to combine the different textures you already have. You might be surprised to find new ways to wear and enjoy your clothes!

Style Tip of the Day:  How to Mix Textures

Combine soft and cozy textures (velvet, cashmere, corduroy, tweed, felted wool) or contrast them with shiny satins, silks, leather and vinyl.

For vinyl, think PVC or faux leather. Vinyl pants are akin to leather but shinier. Sure, you can wear sexy leggings, but you can also get trousers, trench coats and shoes in vinyl. There’s always a tasteful way to create new looks for yourself.

Take a look at some of the ways you can combine these different textures in your outfits.

Tweed Jacket from Net-a-Porter with leather pants
Corduroy Jean from Free People with a leather vest
Silk Dress from Banana Republic with suede jacket and boots
Silk Shirt from Banana Republic with tweed pants
Cashmere Sweater from Soft Surroundings & velvet bag

What textures do you have in your closet? Why don’t you take a look and try different ways to combine them? Whether they are all in one color or tone for a monochrome outfit or different colors with neutrals, can you see the richness in the overall look? Please leave a reply below and let me know how this works for you!

    • I know what you mean. Lol! It’s when I’m wearing all one color that I usually think about mixing the textures. But beginning with texture is a good way to create an outfit, just as you might start with color or a scarf or a piece of jewelry.

  • Hi, Angie, nice to meet you! Thank you for visiting my blog, and for your kind comment. I love colour, texture, pattern and deploy all of them (plus a generous dollop of accessories) in my daily outfits. My personal goal is to dress up every day, whether that’s using tactics like Clothing As Armour, Colour Therapy or Texture for Comfort. Rock on!

    • Hi, Sheila – Thanks for stopping by! Since you are a master at mixing textures, colors and patterns, I can only hope that I might inspire you with more outfit ideas in my color series and print mixing post. I’m happy to connect up with you. <3 - Angie

    • I’m glad you enjoy the visual sensation! The mixed textures also add tactile pleasure. I hope the photos I chose inspire you to mix similar textures in your own outfits.

  • The suede jacket with the yellow dress and boots is such a gorgeous outfit, especially on that model. I am also smitten by the aqua cashmere sweater with the velvet bag. Because of you, I now own a blue velvet blazer!!

    • And because of you, I now own a few fancy facial products that are awesome for my skin. LOL! I’ll bet that blue velvet blazer looks beautiful with your red hair. And velvet, that’s so much more luxurious and glam than wool. XO – Angie
