Accessory Tip: How to Wear the Always Chic Beret This Fall & Winter

From my Style Tips Series, I have an accessory tip. I’m exploring how to wear a beret. This has become adopted by the French as the classic hat to have. Therefore, it is always chic. But this fall and winter, it will be available more than usual in stores because it showed up on the fall runways. What you will find below is lots of inspiration for how to wear it. Age doesn’t matter. As I write this, I am excited to find new ways to wear my berets more often when the weather cools down!

Classic Sophistication Faux Leather Beret from Windsor Store is one of the many types of berets.

~Whenever I refer to leather in this post, it is short for “Faux Leather” to be kind to animals.~

Here’s What You’ll Find in This Post:

  • First, I’d like to point out the different types of berets there are to choose from and how to make them look modern and thus youthful.
  • Secondly, there is a helpful guide on how to position one on the head.
  • Thirdly, you’ll find my accessory tip on the classic pieces that a beret goes with.
  • And finally, I give the various articles of clothing to wear it with to inspire you to reach for that finishing touch, knowing that it is the perfect accessory!

Different Kinds of Berets and How to Look Modern and Youthful in Them

Sparkling Sequin Beret for Women by ShontayRacquelShop at Etsy is modern glam reminiscent of the Roaring 20’s!

There are wool, felt, leather, knit, crochet, velvet and fur berets. They can also be sequined, bejeweled, patterned, embroidered or decorated along the band. I have a furry red angora beret. You can find them oversized, mini or slouchy. There’s really something for everyone!

Wool hats often give your hair static electricity, so I would only consider a wool beret if it’s lined.

Since this type of hat is a classic piece with lots of history, you’ll need to bring it up to date with modern outfits or edgy pieces. I have a black beret with studs around the brim, so it already has an edge to it. A black leather beret will give the same effect. One that’s plain will fit in with this season’s trend when worn with faux leather or combat boots.

You could also add pins or brooches to your beret to show your true self.

Another way to modernize this accessory is to wear it with casual, laid-back clothes like graphic t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, etc.

How to Put One On:

Note:  Hats are ubiquitous for solving the problem of bad hair days. Therefore, you’ll definitely want to leave your hair down. More good reasons to leave it down are because:  1) it might muss your hair a bit anyway, and 2) packing upswept hair inside would make the hat bulge out.

Here are three ways to put on a beret:

Pink Beret Hat 1940s 1930s Fashion Knit Winter Hat Basque Blush
Vintage Pink Beret by KatarinaHats at Etsy is worn tilted at the classic side angle.
  1. Classic style: Wearing a beret on top of your head with a slight tilt is the classic French way to wear it. Simply place the hat a little more than halfway up your forehead so that the headband sits an inch behind your ears. Tuck the brim under, then gently tug the hat fabric to the side until you achieve a flattering tilt. Alternatively, angle the tilt toward the front of your face or the back of your head, depending on your preference.
  2. Back of the head: This style involves perching your beret towards the back of your head, so the bottom brim hits the base of your neck. For this style of wear, place the beret on your head so that the band lands right on your hairline, then slowly stretch the back until it sits at the back of your head. Secure the beret in place with bobby pins or clear clips. Note that this style does not secure the cap tightly, so be careful that it doesn’t fall off!
  3. Un-tilted: Place the beret on top of your head with the headband about an inch above the brow line. Fold the beret brim under for a flat cap look that is more flush against your head. For a puffed-up look, untuck the brim of the beret, place it over your ears, and lightly pull it up from the top.

My favorite is number 3. Here’s an example of wearing it that way below:

A Felt Beret by Ralph Lauren with a striped tee is made modern with Indian tribal accessories and printed pants.

Accessory Tip:

The classic ways to wear a beret are:  with a striped tee, with a blazer over a t-shirt, with a turtleneck or with a jean jacket.
