Age doesn't matter.

How to Create Outfits for Any Age With Touches of Punk Futurism Now

I decided to look into one of the many choices we have in fashion this fall and winter. In the process, I have formed a little guide that can be used as an inspiration to create outfits for any age with touches of punk futurism now.

It takes courage to dare to wear something new and different from what we’re used to. On the other hand, it takes guts to wear something we wore in the past once we get older. That’s where being true to your self comes in; you never have to stop being yourself. And when you get older, I believe it’s easier to break out of expectations and wear whatever you darn please.

This post is for women who want to do just that…and for women who want to take their look into the future a bit…and for women who have some punk rebel in them…and for women who love to wear black (is that all of us?)

Go ahead. Show your true self. And remember, age doesn’t matter!

Punk returns to the forefront of fall fashion as witnessed at Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy, and more, with styles ranging from futuristic, rebellious, and gritty pieces done in plaid, leather, or with heavy-metal embellishments. — From:  “These are Fall’s Biggest Fashion Trends – Shop Them Now” by Laura Lajiness Kaupke

I never dressed punk, but I used to wear black all the time and punk veers toward black quite a bit. Although I’ve been trying to avoid wearing black as much, I’m still attracted to it. It was always the edgy vibe that I liked.

I’ve always been fascinated by futurism as well; I even took a class in alternative futures in college. Just as interesting as historic dress such as Victorian, etc., is imagining what people will be wearing in the ages to come. You might think of space age Star Trek and Star Wars outfits. But right now in real time, designers are continually thinking of how to deconstruct clothing as we know it and create new silhouettes.

So whether you are looking into wearing punk elements of style for the first time like me or you want to get back to restoring your past love for this type of clothing, I’m outlining how to wear it now. Take a piece or two of punk-style clothing or accessories and make them new with your own touch. I’ll end with a few outfit ideas below to get you started.

Minimalistic Outfits That Go Against the Norm

To dress punk, all you actually have to do is focus on minimalistic outfits that go against the norm. For example, a generic outfit for a woman could just be a simple t-shirt and black jeans. To go against the norm, you could add things like a studded belt and a leather jacket. You might also add patterned shirts and mesh or substitute one of those for the tee.

The Feminine Way to Dress Punk

For a typically feminine look, wear black skinny jeans, leopard print or patterned skirts, bullet and stud belts, band tees, leather anything, mesh and ripped mesh, and feel free to throw in a bit of pink. Converse, Doc Martens, and military-style shoes make the look. You could wear just these shoe styles with your favorite basics or add them to an outfit that is simply all black or plaid. It’s not necessary to wear more than one or two elements at one time.

Some of the Different Types of Punk

In general, street punks might wear leather, denim, plaids, metal spikes or studs, chains, military-style boots, clothes with rips and studded belts.

To dress more glam punk, incorporate bright colors, glitter, metallics, spandex, leather, leopard print, neons and satin.

Hardcore punk is the opposite of what it sounds like. It derived from the need to wear simple clothes that are safe to mosh in. A plain t-shirt and baggy cargo pants are the ideal — without spikes or studs, which are not safe to mosh in. This is not to say that anyone is going to mosh. But what we all really want right now, bottom line, is comfort.

The No-Trend Trend

Regardless of which style of punk calls to you (and there are many more than what’s listed here,) it’s all defiantly anti-materialistic. No version of the punk way of life caters to the norm or caves into the mainstream. It’s odd that this is trending because the essence of punk is:  if it’s not trendy, it’s good; if it’s not cool, it’s good. So it’s like the no-trend trend. The whole idea behind punk in the first place is to break boundaries. It isn’t something you can put into a box and say this is or is not punk. It all comes down to wearing what you want the way you want to.

The Comfort Factor in Punk

This allows for a certain degree of grunge to punk. You can choose simple and messy over clean and chic, if you like. What I see most in this season’s designs are oversized clothes and chunky-soled shoes. Comfort reigns. If your t-shirt has wrinkles, no worries. If all you’re wearing is a t-shirt and jeans and nothing else, no problem. This is about throwing on something comfortable and enjoying your day. If you feel like adding special touches, choose what you love and forget about fashion rules.

Mixing It Up

Mix it up. And if anybody asks you any questions, just tell them you’re experimenting with the newest styles.

  • Feel free to wear British punk on your top half and Celtic punk on your lower.
  • Mix up formal with casual. A skirt and masculine boots? Sure thing. Total bedhead, but an outfit you spent hours on? Why not? The idea, as I see it, is to have fun wearing wonderful things but being totally comfortable at the same time.
  • Play up your feminine side by juxtaposing it with masculine items. You can rock a tulle skirt with combat boots if you like. Try feather earrings with a band tee and cargo pants, or fishnets with a loose band tee and skirt.
  • Mix animal-print with plaid.
  • To stay warm when wearing a skirt or dress, layer tights with wool socks and combat/biker boots.

Incorporating Metal and Other Textures

Incorporate metal and other textures. There is nothing wrong with rocking a pair of chinos with a mesh top and a leather jacket. Chains as necklaces, bracelets and belts are all going strong.

Silver is a popular color at the moment. To work in a hint of punk futurism, wear something silver such as:  a silver top, bottom, topper, dress, stockings, gloves, a scarf, shoes, etc. And how about maybe even a silver suit or jumpsuit?

Here are some ways to add a little punk to your look. The key is restraint. Pick only one or two of the following suggestions.

  1. Don’t overdo it; you can start with an accessory or you can just add one or two punk touches to your usual look (to be a little rebellious or to show more of your true self.)
  2. Layer black.
  3. Add a pop of color to an all-black outfit. Think neon colors such as blues, pinks, yellows, oranges, greens. Silver and red are also good choices.
  4. Wear different textures…or one piece that’s made of different textures.
  5. Wear a plaid or neutral-colored button-down shirt. Plaids can be incorporated into your outfit in any way:  toppers, bottoms, scarves, etc.
  6. If you have a t-shirt from one of your favorite bands, wear it alone or under a shirt or jacket. Or wear a tee with your favorite political slogan.
  7. Wear something in an animal print:  a top, bottom, topper, footwear, belt, scarf, etc.
  8. Try wearing distressed jeans, but not overly destroyed. Go for skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans. Wide-leg or baggy jeans are good.
  9. Try a faux leather skirt. It doesn’t have to be too short. You might like a pencil and/or midi style.
  10. Accessorize with a studded belt, chains, a skull pendant, a hat or safety pins.

  11. For footwear, try Vans or Converse sneakers or chunky boots. Biker boots or combat boots work well, especially with buckles or studs. But any boots will do, short or tall. You could also try platform footwear.
  12. Have fun with your hairdo. You can do a spiky pixie cut or add a few red or blue streaks.
  13. Wear a dark color nail polish or silver or glitter.
  14. Defined eye makeup and a red or darker lipstick helps to keep the look youthful and vibrant. Or, wear a glitter lipstick over or alone.
  15. Throw in glitter, tattoos or rubber bracelets.

Outfit Ideas for Punk Futurism Now

These outfit combinations are really true to the punk idea. You don’t have to follow them exactly. Just use them loosely as inspiration and substitute whatever you have or what you like better. For punk futurism now, you can easily substitute silver for gray or black.

  1. Think biker chic, such as a beat-up leather jacket over a faux leather vest or top.
  2. A favorite concert t-shirt with distressed jeans and boots, short or tall.
  3. If you feel more comfortable in a skirt or dress, choose a black sheath dress with fingerless gloves and black fishnet stockings. Add chain jewelry or a pendant with a skull.
  4. Tuck a black graphic tee into black trousers and top with a black blazer. Add a black belt + black heels + black & gold jewelry + a clutch.
  5. A graphic tee + black or blue jeans + a black leather biker vest or jacket. Add a studded belt + Converse sneakers.
  6. A black graphic tee + black skinnies + an olive utility jacket. Add lug-soled, biker or combat boots.

  7. Tuck a black band tee inside a neutral animal-print skirt. Add a studded belt + black tights or fishnets + black biker/combat boots. If cool, add a biker jacket or something in faux leather.
  8. A black rock tee + a black leather skirt + a plaid shirt worn open as a jacket. Add black fishnet stockings + a black studded belt + black heeled ankle boots. Layer bracelets (chains, etc.)
  9. Tuck a band tee inside a black leather skirt. Accessorize with black fishnets or tights + chunky boots such as biker boots or combat boots + a studded bag + a tough bracelet.
  10. A black band tee + black skinny jeans or dark denim. Add a studded belt + biker/combat boots or black Converse-style sneakers or red or other bright color sneakers.
  11. A long graphic tee in gray or black + black leggings + a biker jacket. Add biker boots or combat boots.

  13. A gray or black graphic tee + a charcoal or black tulle skirt + black leggings + a red plaid shirt worn open as a jacket or tied at waist. Top with a biker jacket. Add Black Converse-style sneakers.
  14. A buffalo plaid shirt over a black pencil skirt. Add a black choker + black fishnet tights + black biker/combat boots + a tough bracelet.
  15. A buffalo plaid shirt over black skinnies. Add a black studded belt over the shirt + biker/combat boots + a tough necklace, such as a spiked geometric design.
  16. Tie a buffalo plaid shirt at waist over a black dress. Add a choker + black fishnet tights + black biker/combat boots.

  • With the current trend of world events there’s no wonder that punk is enjoying a comeback. Great style suggestions!

  • Your suggestions are priceless! Although I’m a fan of black, I don’t think I’ve ever worn punk with the exception of a moto jacket that’s long gone. But these looks are so much fun, I’m sorely tempted!

    • Thanks, Allison! There’s plaid, too. I suppose you have some of that. Mix it with something black or silver (like a plaid shirt with silver pants) or chain jewelry…there are lots of options to incorporate into your everyday outfits.

  • Do you know why I love this? It’s so different from how I grew up and something I haven’t really tried before now. In fact, you’re going to laugh, but I just bought some silver jeans at the thrift store last month. I can’t wait to pull them out when it cools down.

    • Hi, Jodie – No way am I going to laugh that you just got some silver jeans! It’s perfect timing, as you can see from the photo of the silver trousers from Zadig & Voltaire in this post. The more you experiment, the better you look. And your mom, too. We’re not getting older, we’re getting better, are we not? 😉 – Angie

    • Hi, Nancy – You must have some punk-style clothes from back in the day or at least you must know what your favorite things are to wear! Now you can make it new by mixing it with silver pieces too. Or just reminisce by using one touch in an outfit. Enjoy! – Angie
