Style Tip: How to Enjoy More Outfits by Dressing Down a Cocktail Dress
The new year is coming and I wish you happy times ahead! What will you be doing to celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? I’m trying to recuperate from Covid, but it’s slow going. So I’m not sure I’ll be able to do anything at all. But I want to share a really good style tip that fits right into the holiday and throughout the entire year. I will be creating lots more outfits by dressing down a cocktail dress or two or three by using the ideas and examples below.
I have a beautiful, abundant wardrobe — too abundant, actually. I’ll have to get rid of whatever I don’t end up using. So I’ve got to get cracking on this once I’m well enough to go out.
I hope you enjoy this and other tips in my Style Tips Series HERE. I use them all myself and I’m 60ish. So age doesn’t matter.
Here you go. Let me know what you come up with!
Style Tip:
Instead of storing a fancy dress in the depths of your closet, give it new life with casual jackets, cardigans or trendy scarves.
Examples of How to Dress down a Cocktail or Prom Dress:
- A motorcycle jacket over a frothy cocktail dress.
- A jean jacket over a cocktail or prom dress. A cute pair of sandals or boots wouldn’t hurt, either.
- Business dressy in an instant: Toss a black blazer over your favorite cocktail frock. Then finish with a pair of opaque tights.
- A cardigan over a cocktail or prom dress. You might like to wear a pair of loafers with this.
- A tailored vest over a cocktail or prom dress.
- A faux leather jacket or blazer over a cocktail or prom dress.
- Shrug: Chubby shrugs make your dress cozy. Look for glamorous details like rhinestone trim, a peppy pattern or sequins.
- A tuxedo jacket: See more on how to make the most of the remarkably versatile tuxedo jacket HERE.
- Flats: Finish off your dressed down look with sweet ballerinas, sassy skimmers, boots (even cowboy boots) or sneakers.
More Ways to Dress Down a Cocktail Dress
As you can see above, you can wear a cocktail dress over jeans or leggings. Western and Native American accessories dress down a cocktail dress. Try a fedora or Western hat, Western boots, turquoise jewelry, beaded jewelry, a concho belt, a shawl in an Indian pattern, etc.

Hi Angie, I am just so sorry to hear that you have Covid! I hope that you get better very soon! What a bummer to be sick during the holidays and to ring in the new year! I absolutely love this post, what a clever way to wear cocktail dresses casually!
Hi, Lola – Thank you so much for your well wishes! Covid has ruined at least couple of years of holidays for me: first due to lockdown and then the sickness itself. At least it took me a few years before I actually came down with it. So I’m thankful for that. Maybe next year I can try this tip for myself! It’s good to hear from you – Angie
Angie, I am so sorry to hear that you are sick with covid. Unfair to be sick over the holidays! I hope you turn the corner soon. I love the velvet boho look and the white dress with the pink shrug – totally different looks, but each works very well!
Thank you for your kind words! Maybe you could use this tip for a date night sometime. I hope it ends up being helpful to you. XO – Angie
