Age doesn't matter.

Are You Up for Some Seriously Chic Classic Style for Fall & Winter Evenings?

When I ask if you’re up for some seriously chic classic style, I’m referring to three in one. The versatile piece of clothing that I’m basing this article on contains all three elements. It’s serious, it’s chic and it’s a classic. It definitely turns out with an air of quiet elegance. Once you achieve the final effect, age doesn’t matter. I hope you will join me in taking a look at how to create some seriously chic classic style for Fall and Winter evenings!

If I wanted to call this a style tip, I could say “Dress up a pair of classic grey or navy flannel pants for a warm and chic Fall & Winter evening look.”

The quintessential grey flannel pants have been touted over the decades as a component of a high-level business outfit. They can go from work to evening events, whether business-oriented or not. A navy flannel suit is the same way. Take the trousers out for dinner or even the whole suit if you wear something lacy or unseen underneath.

Not everyone has a pair of grey flannel pants, or navy. If you don’t, you could wear velvet pants instead of flannel. Or maybe you have some velour lounge pants that could be a substitute for velvet. So, whether you use flannel pants, velvet pants, velour pants or any trousers, you can simplify your outfit with a nice t-shirt or sweater and some heels or pretty flats. Or use what you have in any of the outfit ideas below.

Heels, whether shoes or boots, upgrade flannel pants. However if you are more comfortable in flats or sneakers, wear a fancy top and coverup to dress up your trousers. It’s even better if your footwear, casual or not, is metallic or animal print and/or has a platform sole.

I have thought of some ways to dress up grey or navy pants for Fall & Winter evenings. Here they are:

How to Create Classic Style for Fall & Winter Evenings

Ralph Lauren Collection Alecia Chalkstripe Slim-Leg Flannel Pants from Neiman Marcus
  • Grey or navy flannel pants, whether pinstriped or not, are made glamorous with a sheer top (which can be any color you fancy,) furry coat and heels. A nude or matching camisole covers you in more ways than one (visually and warmly.) Finish with a sparkly necklace.
  • A grey cardigan + grey flannel pants + a bare cream-color camisole.  Add a metallic leather belt + matching metallic evening shoes.
Navy Flannel Pinstripe Suit by Christopher Korey Collective from CKC New York
  • Take a grey or navy suit from day to evening by losing the top and wearing the jacket alone with lavish jewelry, pretty heels & perfect hair and makeup.
  • A long-sleeve v-neck t-shirt or sweater in a shade of white + grey or navy flannel or velvet pants.  Add a metallic scarf + heels.
  • Pair a sweater with grey flannel trousers.  Then add a cardigan in a jewel color such as red, coral, cobalt, teal, etc. — Or instead, add a velvet shirt worn open as a jacket.
High Rise Flannel Wool Wide Leg Pants in Grey by Dries Van Noten at My Theresa
  • Pair a metallic blouse with a pair of grey or navy flannel trousers. Add matching metallic accessories and heels.

Parting Thoughts

I searched for photos for hours and hours to show you how great flannel pants can look for evening. When I could hardly find any, it became obvious to me that casual comfort is king in post-Covid society. Trousers are being dressed down rather than up.  You can see how to do this in my post on how to wear trousers in a more relaxed way.

It just goes to show that this style tip will make you stand out. You may very well be showing everyone at the party a new-to-them way to wear dress pants.

I hope this is helpful to you. Please leave a reply below to let me know if you try this out.

It is the holiday season as I write this. If you are reading this post during this festive time of year, happy holidays to you!

  • This very well-written post brought me back to my days in advertising in NYC when I used to wear trousers and suits. I would often go out at night and needed to dress them up. Oh, I long for those fun and more sophisticated days! The grey outfit you showed was divine. Actually, I went to a friend’s house for dinner with a group of other friends and in response to a compliment on my top, I was saying how my style has dramatically changed to more suburban and casual. Sigh. I still love the flannel trousers!

    • Hi, Allison – Sounds like it made you feel wistful, like you wish you could wear something more glamorous. I suppose you got rid of your flannel trousers or, in fact, all of the trousers you had before moving to the suburbs. I forgot to say (it’s in the second outfit idea under the photo of the navy flannel suit) that you could wear velvet pants instead of flannel. Or maybe you have some velour lounge pants that could be a substitute for velvet. So, whether you use flannel pants, velvet pants, velour pants or any trousers, you can simplify your outfit with a nice t-shirt or sweater and some heels or pretty flats. I think I’ll state that more clearly up front. Thanks for helping me to think of that. You can definitely turn out a suburban casual evening outfit with this pants idea. If you would really like to recreate this look and don’t have any of those pants in your closet, you could go to a second-hand store to get some. I don’t pay attention to keeping my casual style from allowing me to wear my nice things. I just mix and match low and high or throw on a nice thing here and there, now and then. That way, I can wear what I like and create my own style. You know, I always feel like I fit in. I don’t think anyone sees me as out of place. Sometimes I get compliments and other times, women tell me, “I never would have thought of that!” – XOXO, Angie
P.S. The holidays are the best time to dress up more than usual!
