Style Tip of the Day: Color Palette for Outstanding Southwestern Style

Today’s style tip features the neutral color palette that creates the most outstanding Southwestern style. I chose this subject because I want to get more wear from the handmade jacket that I got when I went to Guatemala years ago. I hope this also helps you to figure out new outfits from any Southwestern-style pieces. These could range from sweaters, kimonos, button-down shirts, t-shirts, skirts, pants or leggings, vests, scarves, bags and even jewelry.

Style Tip:

Pair Southwestern pieces with taupe, stone, olive, rose brown or cognac. Add a slouchy weekend purse.

I use my colorful, patterned jacket during transitional weather, spring or fall.

Spring is a good time for this because of the bright colors often present in Southwestern pieces, including turquoise jewelry.

The light colors of taupe and stone recommended in this style tip are also good for Spring. Sandals and bags are easily found in a shade of cognac for spring.

And then in the Fall, boots in cognac are a classic. Western boots are even better with outfits that include a Southwestern style element. The browns and olive greens can actually create an autumnal effect for the transition to Fall.

How to Put Together Your Own Southwestern Style

After seeing examples of how these neutral colors combine with Southwestern pieces, I am reminded of desert scenes. This is one way to envision the outcome of outfits I create with my colorful, patterned jacket.

Accessorize with any of these:  a fedora, a concho belt, a bolo or lariat necklace, silver and turquoise jewelry.

Or, start with turquoise jewelry and create an outfit around that using this color tip.

Take a look in your closet to see what you have that might have a Southwestern motif. Don’t be afraid to stretch it. For instance, my Guatemalan jacket is similar to but not the same as a Southwestern pattern.

My view has now expanded, so I took another look through my wardrobe. Here are some pieces that I had not thought of using in this way before:

  • A couple of different Aztec-patterned cardigans, one of them a duster,
  • Geometric-print palazzo pants,

  • A squash blossom necklace,
  • A Lucky Brand t-shirt that has a turquoise and pink mandala on it,
  • A couple of pieces from Sundance Catalog that have turquoise prints,
  • A skirt, a hoodie & pants and a turquoise printed three-piece set from the Southwest Indian Foundation (each piece worn separately with the colors from this style tip.)

Keep in mind that you can stretch the boundaries by using similar pieces.

Additionally, you can stretch the boundaries of the colors in this style tip. You may want to use any ivory, beige or brown in place of stone, taupe, rose brown or cognac. Also, you might want to use a sage color instead of olive green.

Free your creative ideas and you could end up with an entire wardrobe capsule full of a large number of outfits you may never have thought possible!

The sky is the limit. Older is bolder. And age doesn’t matter!

  • I like southwestern style especially the turquoise jewelry. Hmm, you are reminding me to dig out the beautiful handmade inlay earrings that were made by a Navajo woman I met at Grand Canyon. I may even see if there’s any way my fringed jacket (probably a size 2) could possibly fit me! Love your style tips, as always!

    • Seems that you have a lot of beautiful things that you don’t wear. I’m happy to inspire you to make use of them rather than let them go!
