Style Inspiration: What Do You Need Today to Get an Easy Western Look?
Western fashion is a classic and timeless way of dressing, so age doesn’t matter. It’s also a great way to ride into the new season in style! Just like Ralph Lauren does, you can add touches of the Old West to your favorite basics. I’ll start with some style elements that create an easy Western look. Then I’ll explore the rugged details that can be found on a cattle ranch and applied to your daily outfits.
What Do You Need to Get an Easy Western Look?
First of all, you can easily modernize your look by wearing a Western piece or two with dark suiting or a slinky slip dress.
You probably know that opposites attract in fashion. So feminize your rugged Western wear with ruffles, lace, long prairie dresses and tiered skirts.
Following are components of an easy Western look that can be taken from the ranch and added to outfits for around the house or for going to town.
Rugged details that can be found on a cattle ranch:
These are the deets that give that casual yet romantic vibe of working out on the ranch. To create an outfit with a cowgirl aesthetic, whether subtle or full-on, choose from the style elements listed below:
- A cowboy hat, natch! Try a straw one for summer.

- And if you don’t want to mess up your hair, how about a graphic t-shirt with a picture of a cowboy hat?
- Denim: denim on denim, a jean jacket, a denim vest, a denim shirt, a denim midi skirt and/or jeans (especially flared or bootcut.)

- A plaid shirt is a rancher’s staple.
- Embellished, cowboy-inspired shirting can be styled in a relaxed way as per usual or it can be dressed up with a pretty maxi or midi skirt.
- A vest whether denim, leather, suede and/or fringed.
- Fringe: A fringed jacket with jeans and a tee is all you need to pull off the cowgirl aesthetic. Or, accessorize with a fringed crossbody bag.
- A prairie dress is the feminine touch to contrast with the Western wardrobe that is basically borrowed from the boys. They usually come in floral and paisley prints.

- Ruffles and lace, such as this lace dress, are also good opposites to pair with rugged Western wear, as mentioned above.
- A tiered skirt.
- A serape (long blanket-like shawl or cloak, often brightly colored and fringed at the ends) or serape-inspired print.
- Lace-up details.
- Southwestern, Aztec and Indian prints.

- A poncho, ruana or cape. For example, top a long-sleeve brown t-shirt and blue jeans with a tan suede ruana (a cross between a kimono and a poncho) and belt with a concho belt (see below) or studded Western belt. Layer turquoise necklaces, such as a pendant framed by a long string of beads. Add a silver cuff, rings and one or more turquoise bead bracelets.
- Leather pants or a leather or suede jacket.

- A concho belt, studded belt and/or chunky belt. — For an easy Western look, just add turquoise jewelry and a Western belt to a neutral-color outfit or jeans and a tee.
- Studs, especially on belts.
- Turquoise jewelry — mix with gold or silver.

- A bolo tie — One way to wear it is to top a basic tee or sweater with a jean jacket. Then tie a bandana bandit style (with points in front) and adjust a bolo tie just below the scarf points.
- A bandana scarf.

- Cowboy boots go with anything and everything. Wear anything you want and then simply add cowboy boots and turquoise jewelry to add a Western flair to your outfit. Here are a couple of outfit ideas — 1.) An ivory and/or teal top + ivory/teal printed chiffon maxi skirt or lacy ivory skirt + silver cowboy boots. 2.) A Southwest Indian printed skirt + a top of your choice + a jean jacket. Add turquoise statement earrings + cowboy boots.
- A slouchy shoulder bag, especially with fringe.

These are such easy outfits to put together for a trendy western look! I love all the fringe and that lace dress is definitely something I’d wear!
Fringe and lace are two wonderful things! <3
I’ve always wanted a pair of cowboy boots, but my foot doesn’t bend so not sure I could even get them on! I have some Western inspired boots so I’ll be happy with those! Love the fringe coming back! Thanks for all the inspiration!

Western or Western-inspired boots are the same as cowboy boots in my mind. Don’t give up, though. You never know when the most beautiful cowboy boots will show up in your life that are comfortable too! Just ask the Gods and keep your eye out for the gift to show up. 😉
You nailed it Angie. This is what I was looking for something simple, yet still quite trendy.
Great! Thanks for requesting this subject. And let me know what outfit you end up creating!
