No Fear of Sheer: How to Wear Sheer Skirts in New Laid-Back Ways
Sheer skirts are a trending fashion item for summer 2024, and I love them! This year is different than the sheer trends of the past, as the focus is specifically on skirts rather than dresses. That’s all to the good, because you can always do more with separates. Sheer skirts can be worn for day or evening, and can be dressed up or down. In this post, I am focusing mostly on how to wear sheer skirts anytime.
With this year’s sheer skirt outfits there is room for nuance, which isn’t always the case with bare-it-all trends. It’s up to your interpretation and personal preference, as seen on the runways.
And remember, you don’t really have to bare it all. You can use the sheer skirt to add a feminine touch to your outfit rather than going all-out sexy. So age doesn’t matter.
How to Wear Sheer Skirts
First of all, it’s harder to see through a printed, lace or eyelet sheer skirt. So you might like to try it this way.
Following are some things you can wear under a sheer skirt so that you don’t look naked. If you have a long, slim, sheer skirt you might also be able to wear an opaque short skirt over it.
How to Wear Sheer Skirts Over Presentable Types of Underwear
What? Is that possible?! Well, lingerie looks have been in style for many years. For instance, see my post on how to style pajamas as daywear HERE.
This season, designers have even been showing the sheer skirt over high-waisted briefs. But in my opinion, that’s best kept in the privacy of your home for a romantic evening.
For evenings out, a pretty slip that you would wear under any dress or skirt lends a sheer skirt the opaque under layer it needs. The slip should be the same color as the skirt, and its length can depend on how much leg you want to show.
For something more modest, consider bike shorts or leggings.
Add a Cover Up
Layer It
For a more modest look, you can layer a sheer skirt over shorts, crops, jeans, leggings, pants or another skirt.

Try a Sheer Skirt as a Swimsuit Cover Up
Wearing a sheer skirt as a swimsuit cover up could be pretty to go from the pool or beach to the bar or restaurant, especially a beach bar. You might want to add a tank or tee over the top.
Outfit Ideas for Sheer Skirts
Now that I’ve gathered the style possibilities above, I am gravitating towards certain ways of wearing my black sheer skirt. My favorite under layers are a black slip, black leggings or navy bike shorts. I like the idea of belting a tunic-length shirt over the skirt. Whatever top I may wear with it, I will probably also add one of the under layers to make sure I’m covered.
Outfit combinations: how to wear sheer skirts anytime.
- Around the house: Add an oversized sweatshirt or t-shirt & some cute socks.
Wear a pretty peasant top or poet shirt over or under a sheer skirt. If the skirt is unlined, add a slip under it. Finish with combat boots or footwear of your choice.
- Create a monochrome outfit, all in one color: a sheer skirt over a slip with a tank or vest top & flip flops or flat sandals of your choice (feminine or chunky, such as Birkenstocks.) If cool, add a jacket or a shirt worn open as a jacket.
- Wear a layered chiffon skirt with a tank or tee & a jean jacket. Add flat sandals.
This is the skirt I found on Amazon, which is no longer available there. This one from Free People was too long on me. The one I ended up getting is identical but a bit shorter.
- Tuck a black or charcoal t-shirt into black jeans and top with a sheer black maxi skirt. Add an amazing black belt + a gold bar necklace + gold hoop earrings + flatform sandals.
- A turtleneck + leather pants + a sheer skirt. You might like to add chunky boots & a fedora hat.
- Sheer skirt over black leggings with a black tee, graphic or not, and black heels or sandals.
More Outfit Ideas
- You might like to try a black body-conscious dress under a black sheer maxi skirt. Black tights would be good with this and boots. If cool, add a cover up.
- Wear a sheer skirt with a Henley top, short sleeve or long sleeve. Add casual footwear and an under layer of your choice.
- A sheer maxi skirt + an oversize sweater + biker boots.
