Style Tip of the Day: Easy Ways to Wear a Pencil Skirt
Does the thought of wearing a pencil skirt make you think of being restricted to sexy or formal events? Does it seem too form-fitting to wear when heading out for a big meal? Today’s style tip provides you with easy ways to wear a pencil skirt. You’ll find that you can create outfits that take you anywhere, anytime with more comfort than you may have thought. See what it looks like in the examples below. And remember, age doesn’t matter!
Style Tip:
Balance a form-fitting pencil skirt with a loose shirt.
Easy Ways to Wear a Pencil Skirt
When I first came across this advice, the picture I had in my mind was of an oversized or tunic-length t-shirt over a short pencil skirt. In fact, I wore a big political t-shirt over my short black pencil skirt and black sandals just last week. It was a hot day and I was working with my husband at the Detroiters for Tax Justice meeting. This outfit was comfortable and looked good. It was something a little different, which I like.
But as I began to search for photos to illustrate this post, most of the pencil skirt and loose top outfits I saw were half tucked or bloused inside the waist of the skirt. You will see that in most of the photos below.
I like the metallic skirt with loose white tee as seen above, but I usually wear a long pendant with this type of outfit. I’m thinking of trying an oversize tee over a long pencil skirt with high-top sneakers. On chilly days, I like the idea of throwing a sweatshirt or big cardigan around the shoulders as an extra layer.
Here’s an example of a loose tunic belted over a midi-length pencil skirt. Depending on the volume of the tunic, you may not need to belt it. And it doesn’t matter if the skirt is shorter or longer; the slim silhouette is perfectly balanced by a tunic top.
A blouson top (as seen above) is an easy solution to pairing a loose top with a form-fitting skirt.
I like the easy, laid-back feel of a loose tee over any pencil skirt, short or long.
On the other hand, here’s what I mean by blousing a top inside the waist of the skirt. It’s loosely tucked, eased out from the waist band just a bit.
A loose, open-knit sweater over a slim skirt works for transitional weather.
Then, when the weather gets cold, a big chunky sweater is always cozy to wear over slim bottoms.
Metallic skirts are not just for evening. With an oversized shirt tied in a knot and flat sandals, a long metallic skirt can be worn from day to easy evenings.
A long, button-down shirt and casual footwear dresses down a satin skirt to take it anywhere.
Everything comes in denim, from pencil skirts to oversized or tunic tops. A big shirt belted over or under a denim pencil skirt creates classic structure.

I love a pencil skirt, but, alas and alack, they do not like me! I used to wear them all the time, but they would ride up and practically be belts by the time I got to the end of the hall! So, now, I admire them on others. But, I could easily adapt all of your ideas to the skirts that remain where they need to be! I really like the long loose tunic over another skirt! So many wonderful ideas, Angie!

Your comparison to a pencil skirt becoming a belt really got me. Lol! How creative of you to think of using these outfit ideas with different kinds of skirts. You’re full of inspiration!
