Age doesn't matter.

Why Don’t We Throw Out All the Rules About Tiaras?

Do you believe you are the decider of what you wear? Do you want to be told what to wear in your 60’s? I say older is bolder, so age doesn’t matter. What’s popular is irrelevant, right? So why don’t you wear what you love and be your true self? In that vein, why don’t we throw out all the rules about tiaras? Let’s follow the lead of designers who have added them to just about any outfit.

Tiaras are still in style, but mostly for weddings. I assume that’s because it takes some guts to wear one casually. But like everything else, it can be dressed down.

If you prefer to look and feel more normal, there are also tiara-style headbands. So never fear! This is doable.

Throw Out All the Rules About Tiaras!

A tiara that is a narrow band can be layered with another, wider headband.

Some say that wearing a tiara can break the ice and that people will admire your zest for accessorizing. It’s perfect for Halloween, music festivals, birthday parties, dinner parties and many other special occasions.

There are ways to wear a tiara headband casually. Consider a delicate tiara with smaller embellishments for a more subtle, everyday style. Or, you might prefer a simple crystal headband.

Let’s look at the key points to wearing a tiara casually. And then I’ll just start your creative juices flowing with a few ideas of what to wear with one. Feel free to experiment!

I’m going to take my first baby step by wearing one for Halloween. Then I’ll wear sparkly headband versions. And from there, I’ll see how far I can go with this!

Choose the right tiara —

Opt for a smaller, less elaborate tiara with delicate details for a more casual look.

Hair placement —

Place the tiara lower down on your forehead for a more casual look.

Hair styling —

Wear your hair down and messy, or pull the sides back over the tiara. Day-old hair without conditioner provides more grip for the tiara. Put on the tiara after you’ve finished with hair spray.
Secure with pins —
If necessary, use bobby pins to secure the tiara in place, especially if your hair is fine or slippery.

Clothing —

Avoid wearing heels and fussy clothing.

A bejeweled headband is a form of tiara that dresses up ANYTHING you’re wearing. So you can toss one on and go out the door in the evening dressed in sweats or jeans and a tee.

    • It’s a fun idea, isn’t it? I bought the blue crystal one and absolutely love it! It doesn’t have to fit over the ears because that usually hurts after awhile. But I can wear it further forward sort of like a crown with my hair down and it fits comfortably. It will be useful as a nice hair accessory when going out in the evenings.

  • I love the look of tiaras/headbands, especially handmade ones, but no matter how I try to wear them, I either get a headache from them pressing on my ears or they keep slipping no matter how I try to fix them which means I get a headache from cramping up.
So the only one I made is now sitting on my manikin’s head instead 😉

    • Hi, Cat – Did you try the fastening instructions that are in my blog post? I’m familiar with the mannequin solution. Lol! I have a headband with small glittery bunny ears that I hardly ever wear, but my teddy bear wears it every day of the year. 😉

  • I love this trend, tiaras are beautiful! Unfortunately they don’t work well on me with short hair. Thanks for linking at Is This Mutton and have a good weekend

    • I was thinking those headbands always give me a headache, too. But I just bought the blue crystal tiara headband and it is so comfortable when set on the crown rather than over the ears. And it looks like a beautiful headband so I don’t feel conspicuous wearing it when I go out someplace!
