Style Tip: How to Enjoy More Outfits by Dressing Down a Cocktail Dress

The holidays are here and I wish you happy times ahead! What will you be doing to celebrate this year? I was disappointed that my family’s get-togethers have shrunk since Covid. Many things changed after that, didn’t they? I have different ways of celebrating than in the past. But whatever the occasion, here’s a really good style tip that fits right in with fun times now and throughout the entire year. Let’s create more outfits by dressing down a cocktail dress using the ideas and examples below!

I have a beautiful, abundant wardrobe — too abundant, actually. Unfortunately, I’ll have to get rid of many things that I just don’t use. I’m hoping this style tip will help me wear some of my fancy dresses to make them worth keeping. It can also help you get more use out of your special-occasion dresses.

You can find lots more inspiration in my Style Tips Series HERE. I use them all myself and I’m 60ish. So age doesn’t matter.

Legend Houndstooth Scarf from Free People with an oversized blazer is one way to dress down a cocktail dress.

Style Tip:

Instead of storing a fancy dress in the depths of your closet, give it new life with casual jackets, cardigans or trendy scarves.

In addition, you can dress down a fancy dress with a blazer (including one in corduroy, faux leather or linen,) a sweater, coat or flats.

For a casual jacket, think jean jacket, leather jacket, etc.

  • Hi Angie, I am just so sorry to hear that you have Covid! I hope that you get better very soon! What a bummer to be sick during the holidays and to ring in the new year! I absolutely love this post, what a clever way to wear cocktail dresses casually!

    • Hi, Lola – Thank you so much for your well wishes! Covid has ruined at least couple of years of holidays for me: first due to lockdown and then the sickness itself. At least it took me a few years before I actually came down with it. So I’m thankful for that. Maybe next year I can try this tip for myself! It’s good to hear from you – Angie

  • Angie, I am so sorry to hear that you are sick with covid. Unfair to be sick over the holidays! I hope you turn the corner soon. I love the velvet boho look and the white dress with the pink shrug – totally different looks, but each works very well!

    • Thank you for your kind words! Maybe you could use this tip for a date night sometime. I hope it ends up being helpful to you. XO – Angie
