Why Is It Important to Show Your True Self?

A few months ago, Life Coach Cat Coluccio wrote a post on her blog called “Vulnerability:  3 Reasons Why Reinvention Begins with You Showing Your True Self at Midlife.”  Here at Your True Self Blog I would like to discuss these aspects of the importance of showing your true self, at midlife and beyond.  Baby boomers today are speaking out, standing up and showing themselves as women never have before.  By doing so, they are changing how women are seen and treated in our society.  It is a legacy being given to future generations of women — a new world in which age doesn’t matter.

Here’s what Cat says happens when you take the courageous step of showing your true self:

  1. You liberate yourself from expectation:  True vulnerability means saying “this is who I am” in the face of a world that demands perfection.
  2. You open yourself up to possibility:  Summoning the courage to take a bold new step in your life despite feeling vulnerable can lead to a period of life-changing transition.  (My family encouraged me to create this blog when I retired despite the fact that I knew nothing about how to do this.  My life is different, and better, because of it. — Angie)
  3.   You enable others to find their voices:  Cat says, “It’s like I say to my clients – when we fulfil our own life purpose, we can’t help but affect others in our world.”

Being authentic is “fierce,” because it reveals power of self.  We are all good enough, and then work to make that better as we face our day and society.  But ultimately, we are always who we are. Making ourselves a better version doesn’t hurt.  It can even be a bold step.

I encourage women to stay calm as they age because age doesn’t matter.  Instead, I believe in showing our true selves, who we truly are, the authentic self.  By this I don’t mean just be plain and sloppy (or frumpy as many women fear.)  What I mean is:  express your best self, wearing what you want where you want.  Finally, after a lifetime of trying to fit in with groups at school, work, etc., we are free to let our true selves be known. Wisdom gained lets us know that it’s okay.

And I have discovered that our true self, who we are inside, is ageless. We are the same self that was, is, and always will be. That is our essence, our spirit, our soul, that doesn’t get old and wrinkled and die.  Beyond vulnerability, it takes courage to be authentic in every way.

That is our true power.

Let’s support each other.  When we show our true selves, take back our power and assert our worth, let’s do it with love.  Not only is that powerful, but that’s where real beauty really comes from.
