A black velvet blazer is a classic staple. If you feel better in navy, feel free to substitute that and think of it as your new black.

And if you don’t go to many fancy events, you can get just as much use out of a casual version such as a kimono jacket, bomber jacket or even a jean jacket in velvet.

As a casual alternative to velvet, you can substitute velveteen or velour.

Here’s What I’ll Cover

I’ll start with evening and holiday outfit combinations because that’s when we automatically think of wearing a velvet jacket. Then I will go on to special events, then business looks and then I will give you outfit combinations that are more casual. I will end with other ways to wear velvet jackets or blazers for any variety of situations.

But first, let me note the basic formula for wearing a velvet jacket or blazer and then give you a quick style tip:

From Soft Surroundings
  • Basic formula:  wear a velvet jacket or blazer with a white shirt or blouse and jeans.
  • Tip:  Wear a velvet jacket or blazer with any top and your favorite jeans. Then add any scarf you like.

  • I love, love, love velvet! I splurged a few years ago on an unstructured jacket/blazer/topper from Johnny Was. I love it, but it’s been a skosh tight. I’m afraid I’ll pull the seams apart. But, I’ve lost a few lbs so it may work this winter. I bought a velvet blazer from Old Navy and promptly donated it after wearing it a few times. I just can’t wear a blazer. The proportions are wrong (even with petite sizing). But, an unstructured jacket is another story! I’m so glad I don’t live close to a Sundance store…I’d be bankrupt! Their pieces are so so gorgeous and unique! Thanks for all these tips!

  • I discovered a black, sorta-velvet jacket I had forgotten about. So I’ll pull it out for my church events. Only problem is I have a dog with white hair!

    • Well, sounds like this (velour?) jacket will go to church and then go somewhere safe when you commune with your doggie! I’m glad you were inspired, though, to give this jacket some love 😉

    • Hi, Nancy – There are more tips on styling velvet to come. So choose your favorite item and then check back to have fun wearing it! XOXO – Angie

  • I love the way that you show us how to be versatile with clothing. When I was a young mum, I read a style book which said: always have a black blazer/jacket, preferably velvet. So I did.

    • Hi, Ratnamurti – I know it’s spring on your side of the world while it’s fall here. A black or navy jacket of any kind ups the style in so many cases. It can be used to keep the chill off on cooler days, too. So even while your velvet jacket waits for the cold weather, a black jacket in a different material will serve you the rest of the time. I have a black blazer in velvet, in sweatshirt material, in classic tailoring…and one in polyester that zips up. I also have a navy flannel blazer, which is another classic. I’m glad you appreciate my outfit ideas and get use out of them. Thanks! – Angie
