This week, we were saddened to lose our longtime, dedicated Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Now it’s time for mourning, respect and remembering this feminist icon. It’s not a time for rushing a new Justice to fill her seat one week later just before an election. That would be an injustice to her memory. And it would take away the rights of the people to have a say. Their vote is their chance to have a say in the matter at hand.
Also known as Notorious RBG, she received this nickname from a young woman named Shana Knizhnik who compared RBG’s dissenting opinions to protest lyrics by rapper Notorious B.I.G. The idea was that RBG was tough and absolutely awesome. Age doesn’t matter when you speak out and stand up for what’s important!
Crowds showed up at the Supreme Court steps and across the country, holding vigils after the passing of this tiny yet great woman. What they are feeling in their hearts is not something that is easy to put into words. Poetry can help a little. So I have penned a poem of hope for the grieving:
Women’s fashion has helped them throughout their history of protest, including their efforts over 100 years ago when they won the right to vote. (See my celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment HERE.) Age doesn’t matter when a certain color, symbol or slogan is worn by women showing their support for certain issues. Fashion is how to show where you stand and how to show your true self without having to say a word. And we need this now more than ever before!
August 2020 marks 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote in the United States of America. So women won the right to vote but when will they be equal? Here it is well into the 21st century already. Don’t you think it’s about time?! And when we are finally equal, let’s also remember that age doesn’t matter! That’s another change that is well overdue in our society.
.. People have been clashing over opposing viewpoints since Donald Trump was elected, COVID-19 spread throughout the world and a black man was murdered for all the world to see. So I thought now would be a good time to examine how to keep our opinions but stop the judgments that cause us to fight and divide. There is a growing realization of how important acceptance is in our global society — of all people no matter what color, nation or creed. And age doesn’t matter.
So, what’s the difference between judgment and our opinion?
When the Coronavirus invaded our world, fashion and style seemed to pale in comparison to the serious issues that we suddenly had to deal with. Many fashion bloggers wondered if what they had to offer was important. So why is style important, even now? I found some answers.
The first thing that I thought to do as a fashion and lifestyle blogger for women over 60 (age doesn’t matter; we all have the same basic needs) was to address the issues of health and well being, physically and emotionally. But then, I wanted to reassure you that style is indeed important. I am talking personal style here, not fashion. We don’t need to keep up with the latest fashions during a pandemic.
“Fashion is not art; it’s the art of living.” — Marc Jacobs
But style is artistic and creative. And creativity and art are personally fulfilling and inspirational, thereby reducing stress — something needed especially at a time like this. It is good for your mental and emotional health to distract yourself from anxious thoughts and focus on something pleasurable.
Also, color and crystals are healing therapies. We can wear both to feel better.
So let’s explore further: why is style important, even now?Continue Reading
