Yesterday, I was wishing my cousin a happy birthday despite the fact that her mother had just died. She replied, “I’m glad we’re still having them.” We want to still have them for a long time to come, and we want them to be healthy and happy too.
In a “Natural Awakenings” magazine article entitled Ageless Being: Staying Vibrant in Mind, Body and Spirit by Kathleen Barnes, the author begins with quotes by Christiane Northrup, M.D. She is a leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, which includes the unity of mind, body, emotions and spirit. Dr. Northrup often says, “Don’t tell anyone how old you are. Another birthday means nothing.” As I always say, age doesn’t matter! So I’d like to explore here what we can do to live a long, fulfilling life.
I’m so happy to be a member of the Forever Fierce Revolution Facebook group. They are so supportive, and there are so many members…not just bloggers but also midlife women who want to connect with each other. Members have blogs that cover so many ages and so many different styles and topics.
The group started as the Fierce50, but then women in their 40’s, 60’s and 70’s joined as well. Now the group is broadening yet again with a campaign Bridging the Gap (BtG) between women young and old. (I might start a group called Sensational60… Lol!) Forever Fierce is expanding so much that stylistas in their 20’s through 70’s were at the meetup. So, Age doesn’t matter anymore!
Shopping at Meijer, I spotted an interesting woman, nicely-dressed with voluminous white hair. As we passed each other, I stopped in my tracks. I introduced myself and she told me her name was Sandy. I asked if she would mind posing for a photo and she said, “Sure!”. We looked around us and said in unison, “in front of…eggs?!” We were next to the dairy case. Baked goods looked much nicer, so we moved along to the case of special occasion cakes to take our photo.
When she told me she was 76, my jaw dropped in disbelief with the same reaction that everyone else probably has. She said, “The number is scary, but I don’t feel old and I don’t think I look old.” I said, “Oh my gosh, you give me hope that I won’t just shrivel up and get old when I’m in my 70’s!” Obviously, age doesn’t matter! This is a diary of the healthy lifestyle goals that my son, Chris, and I are making together each month.
Since it takes 21-30 days to develop a new habit, making a goal for the month ahead is an effective strategy.
Chris and I agree that making these monthly goals together and posting our results here for you to see helps us to improve our health. I’ve always found that if I say out loud to someone what I plan on doing, I’m more likely to do it. Because if I said I would, I feel responsible to follow through.
Age doesn’t matter. It’s never too late. You can always make progress and actually reverse the signs of aging!
In May, my goal was to count calories (for the first time ever!) and keep them down to 1200 a day. Chris was so exhausted from insomnia and hard work that he decided to try to get enough sleep each night.Continue Reading
Over the holiday weekend, I attended the Walk Fashion Show in Detroit’s Eastern Market district. The venue was big enough to accommodate a large runway, a light-show backdrop, photography shoots, fashion and beauty vendors, food and drink stands, and the designers with plenty of front-row and close-up seating. The only thing was the acoustics; it was hard to understand what the announcer was saying.
I was most interested in the emerging designers. There was street wear and evening wear. I was not so interested in the tight, revealing, body-con outfits. And it seemed to me that was what the independent designers at the show were focused upon.
The first emerging designer in the show was Teasers Boutique (Facebook page: Teasers Boutique – Paulette). Although their club wear can really be tight and short, there were some really interesting outfits that could possibly be worn by anyone. Although they were sheer, there were only peeks of sheerness here and there with all else covered by unique design details. When you can see but not see, age doesn’t matter. Continue Reading
