How to Get a Sleek and Interesting Monochromatic Look

Probably the easiest way to create an outfit is to choose a top and bottom in a matching color.  And voila!  You have a monochromatic look.  Age doesn’t matter.  What matters is that the color looks good on you and you love it.  When you know how to get a sleek and interesting monochromatic look, even the most comfortable outfit can instantly project a classy vibe.  Let’s explore the ways to nail this look!

Also, wearing only one shade creates a slimming effect.  It’s commonly known that black seems to take off pounds, but any other color worn head to toe works in a similar way, as well.

Monochrome is low color contrast, so it will look especially great on you if you have a low color contrast between your hair, skin and eye color.

For a truly monochromatic style, pick a color and wear it head to toe (shoes optional) in different shades.

To go for a monochromatic look, match pants to pumps to top; coat or jacket too!  For instance, wear a black top with black trousers, a black jacket or coat and black booties.

During the spring and summer, you might try a white t-shirt with white pants or jeans and a white cardigan. Then add a white printed scarf or shawl, white sandals and a white purse. You could add clear crystal and gold  accessories.

Besides varying shades, another way to make monochrome look interesting is to choose pieces in the same color but different textures.  That’s why jewelry in the same color as your outfit looks right:  because it adds sparkle, shine or texture to the color you’re wearing.

You don’t have to stick with solid colors.  One or more prints in the same shade is easily done!

5 Tips on How to Add Interest to a Monochromatic Outfit

  1. Working a leopard-print belt into a neutral outfit, such as shades of white, tan or beige, will add spice to a monochromatic look.
  2. Gold looks smashing with all black or all white, or both black & white.

  3. To a neutral outfit, add turquoise jewelry.
  4. Wear coral jewelry with an all-black, gray or beige outfit.
  5. Simply add the proverbial “pop of color,” with a scarf or jewelry.
