How to Get the Rock Chic Look
Let me introduce you to my good friend, Sinderella. She has had a career singing, playing bass, recording and touring with several bands. Those include Glitter Trash, Madhouse and Fillmore Slim, as well as support for LA Guns! She has also worked in film and TV. I asked Sin if she could tell me: “How can women over 60 get the Rock Chic look?” She has honed a nice glam rock look for herself by now that she can pass on to the rest of us. Right off the top of her head, she gave me the tips that I’m sharing with you here today. Since age doesn’t matter, her advice can work for anyone who wants to rock this style!
About Sin
Back when I was 20 something, I knew a guy who got a really creative haircut. I asked him where he got it done. He directed me to Sin, who was doing hair in her basement back then. I had her try some daring do’s on me, and we’ve been friends ever since!
Today, she co-owns Paula’s Barber Shop in the Historic Depot Town of Ypsilanti, Michigan, where she is known for doing Rock ‘n’ Roll Hair. She also teaches art and guitar.
Sin very graciously sent me photos of her style and took photos of her wardrobe items. She said, “These are all I could find not in stage wear!” Just so you know, Sin dresses like this every day…
So I present to you Sin showing us her glam rock look. Following her tips and looks is a glam rock wardrobe capsule based on what she’s wearing in the photos. She said, “Mix and match, to create any look!”
8 Tips for How to Get the Rock Chic Look
- First of all, don’t gain weight. You don’t have to be thin, but stay in shape. Sin does yoga once a week, hits the gym at least three times a week, and limits carbs.
- Don’t give a darn about what anyone thinks. Be your true self. Don’t be afraid to be eccentric; it’s key to this style!
- Wear some kind of sparkle: at your ears, neck, wrists (a choker, earrings, cuffs, etc.), above the waist only. Never wear a sparkly belt unless you’re onstage rockin’ out with a guitar. Lol!
- Incorporate patent leather or metallic boots, shoes, bags.
- A bit of faux fur, ostrich feather or fluff will turn you into glam rock ‘n’ roll instead of an old eccentric Joan Jett.
- Long fingerless gloves are a must!
- Try hair extensions!
- You can always grab something black and go anywhere in it!
A Glam Rock Capsule Wardrobe
The following essential items to a rock chic wardrobe are items owned and worn by Sin in the above photos. Sin says she shops at teenage stores such as Forever 21, at Rainbow and at thrift stores. She also refashions items, such as the boots shown below. She added the feather trim and rhinestone crosses herself. Then she mixes and matches with her designer pieces.
- A black dress. A unique design is good, such as an asymmetrical hem for instance.
- A black leather jacket. Bonus points for patent leather.
- A metallic jacket, boots, shoes, bags.
- Short black skirts in leather, satin, lace, mesh, etc.
- Touches of faux fur.
- Something made with ostrich feathers, such as a boa.
- Sparkly choker, earrings, cuff bracelets, wrap bracelets, etc.
- Accessories in faux leather, studs, leopard-print, etc.
- Long, fingerless gloves.

How great to know that Sin is only about an hour away from me. I’ll definitely recommend her if anyone I know is ready to be a rocker chic.
And how great to know that you are not far from me, Marcia! I had no idea. I have a friend I meet for lunch whenever I go to Sin’s shop to get my hair done. After awhile, she started going there to get hers done too, because she liked how mine was turning out (I am a natural type, not a rock type.) So although Sin is really great if you want to try a creative style, she also has a lifetime of experience and credentials to do what you want. And she listens to you. Sadly, she blew out her vocal chords at the end of her singing career and is slowly healing. Her shop is a fascinating place in Depot Town, Ypsilanti. She loves animals and customers drop in with their dogs as they’re on a walk because their dogs excitedly drag them in to get treats. The shop has a vintage barber chair manned by the male barber on their team. And the prices are low. – Hugs, Angie
Love the freedom and glow in Sin!
