How To Give New Life To Tops That Are Too Short
Were you almost ready to get rid of tops that were too short? Have they been sitting in your closet for a long time not being worn? What do you do when you have a top that you consider to be too short?
You can add a top extender underneath it to make it longer! Age doesn’t matter. There are different kinds of top extenders, or what may be considered tunic-length tops with a hem made of lace, ruffles or chiffon.
Previously, I wrote about skirt extenders. They are used to lengthen tunics or dresses that are too short for you. You can read about those in my post, “What in the World is a Skirt Extender?” HERE.
A top extender or tank extender can be worn with a kimono, vest or any top over it. Then you can add skinny or straight-leg jeans, pants, leggings, jeggings or a slim skirt.
Why don’t you choose a top extender and look through your closet for all of the tops you could possibly pair it with? Use my ideas below, or make your own list of outfit ideas for the weeks ahead!
Wear A Top Extender Under a Short Top
- A short blouse over a tank extender + skinny jeans. Add a long pendant + layered bracelets.
- A button-down shirt over a tank extender in a similar color + skinny jeans. Add bangles + a short pendant.
- Wear a plaid shirt, buttoned or not, over a top extender over skinny jeans.
- A hip-length or shorter swing top + a tank extender with the lace showing below the top + jeans.

- Button a short cardigan over a tank extender and skinny jeans. Add a statement necklace and peep-toe ankle boots.
Using a Top Extender as a Tunic:
You can just use a top extender as a tunic since it’s extra long. Here are some ideas for wearing it in different ways:
- Day to Evening: A tank extender + a long pencil skirt. Add a long pendant + wedge sandals or flat gold sandals.
- An embroidered mesh tunic tank + destroyed skinny jeans + a kimono or draped vest. Add sandals + jewelry of choice.
- A long-sleeve lace-hem t-shirt + a long or short vest over it + skinny jeans. This could even be an embroidered mesh tunic tank with a fleece vest!
- A long-sleeve lace-hem tee + skinny blue jeans + a draped vest. Add a tassel necklace. Or, add statement earrings + a long pendant + a watch or chain bracelet.
- A tank extender + a cardigan or kimono + skinny jeans. Add jewelry of choice.
- A draped vest + a tank extender + skinny jeans.
- A crochet cardigan + a tank extender + skinny jeans. Add a long gold pendant or two + some bangles.
- A big shirt worn open as a jacket over a tank extender + skinny jeans. Add a cuff and some narrow bangles.
I have some lace-hem tops that I love. But I want to wear them more often in new and different ways. So I collected these ideas in order to come up with new outfit combinations. I hope it is helpful to you as well. Please let me know if you try it, by leaving a comment below!

Wow! These are some great ideas! I think I have one of those extenders from Soft Surroundings, too, I haven’t thought of it in quite awhile! I bought it a few years ago in black. Hmmm I like this idea!
